How does the Complimentary chauffeur work?

It is home to airport then airport to hotel once you land or does it also include the hotel to airport etc one the return as well? I'm planning a trip to Tokyo and am trying to justify the whole UC experience as opposed to just the flight, especially as I can't drive and walk around with a Sightsaber (aka white cane).

For each leg of your journey that is in a D or J fare the CDC covers home or hotel to airport and then airport to home or hotel.

Each one-way full J or D UC fare includes 2 CDC transfers (one at each end of the journey)

So if you book a full UC return J or D fare which includes the CDC service, it's at both ends and both ways so you will get 4 separate transfers getting you from your home to the airport in the UK. Airport to hotel at your destination.

Coming home it's hotel to the airport and then airport to your home.

Is there any transferable benefit for those of us living well away from LHR? For eg, would they provide a CDC transfer from home -> regional airport ?

To be honest, unless the ticket is being paid by someone else, the extra cost of a D or J isn't worth what you get. It's much cheaper to buy a Z, then contact Tristar or their local equivalent for the cost of a private booking. The only real difference will be the lower miles earning for a Z and you can't use the Drive-through check-in at LHR.

YMMV

Yes, all the details can be found on this page of the VS site.

Each to their own: To be honest buying a D or J with MY/OUR money is well worth it when travelling with my sister and or her family - 3 heavy cases each make the drive thru worth every penny for us !
Dont use miles so not bothered about that bit.
