On complaining to a VS operative last week as to why VS did not fly to Canada, he said he had heard something on the grapevine regarding the possibility of this happening 'sometime in the near future'. Has anybody in the know heard anything about this or was he just talking out of another orifice ?[?]

It wouldn't surprise me if it does happen since VS previously flew to Toronto. However whether the current economic climate is a right time to restart the route is a different matter. I do hope they fly to YYZ again since last time I have to connect from JFK which wasn't fun.

THere was a thread on these lines a couple of months ago (but cant remember what it was called so can't link to it) linked in with a VS order order for new and more planes.

There was a roumour that Vancouver would be one of the destinations - mainly due to the cruise market.

I would be happy with Vancouver and / or Toronto as Canadian destinations if only to keep Air Canada on its toes.

As was discussed in the ORD thread, YYZ was operated for a couple of months back in 2001 before it was scrapped after 9/11. Unlike ORD it has never returned.

YYZ is hugely competitive market from London and also from places such as India, I believe EK are currently sending at least one A380 there a day in preference to JFK.

I doubt we will see YYZ but YVR is a huge possibility and has been stated numerous time in VS blurb on potential destinations when the 787 arrives.

Or those darn A330s the first of which is due in 2011 or earlier than the 787 ...

I would love it if VS did start flying to Canada in the future - it is one beautiful country! [8D]

That has more to do with the bi-lateral agreement than demand, bu that I mean that they can only send in one plane a day rather than having a more liberal agreement such as with the UK.

I was not aware of that. I thought it may have been some sort of knock on effect of the oil/mining business in both regions.

I don't believe VS has ever done Vancouver, only Toronto. It has been talked about as being a destination when the 787 announcement was made.

Yeah, the agreement is something like 4 flights a week to Ek and AC, something like that and the Canadian government won't open up negotiations for more.

As to Canada, Vancouver all the way.

Thanks for all the info people, I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Vancouver also has the Winter Olympics this time and would have made quite a lucrative proposition for VS. Agree Air Canada must be kept on it's toes, on the return February flight from Montreal the food was so bad I actually complained on board, as did several others, and in writing - both to no avail/response!

Montreal is a huge cash cow for AC in particular to Paris. It is a rather odd place because it has exceptionally strong yields up front but apparently very seasonal demand down the back.

I doubt we will see VS in YVR before the Olympics. VS had the opportunity to start a service to PEK before the last summer games and ignored it completely. YVR must be able to work though, heck if NZ can maintain a service from AKL, surely there must be demand ex LHR for VS.
