Who?
I presume you mean the FC numbers as you move up or down a tier? I suppose only VS can answer this but it does mean that it is easy to see at a glance whether a passenger is Red, Silver or Gold by the prefix

Sorry a little cryptic, but you figured it out.
I guess that makes it easier but other airlines seem to manage just fine, and your membership card has the appropriate color on it.
It's a pain having to deal with different numbers. With United I've had the same # since I joined that makes life much easier whatever tier I've been in.
Though it does appear that even if you don't change the number on your Amex link up or on partner bookings, the points still flow through, meaning the db probably has at least two fileds with current and old numbers - that just seems crazy from a db management point of view.

Yes, I can understand why the number changes with Tier, but why does it change when you link your FC account to a credit card?

You keep the same number with BA also.

And EK and AA etc.
VS's numbering has it's irritations, but then the if one tries to stay Au it's not so bad ...

Different systems different ideas. All your FC numbers will work with your account, they are remain linked to the one account.

I have had three (yes three!!) AU numbers this year - I renewed in July, but my membership renewal pack was not sent out, after several queries, I was changed number and a new pack issued; this didn't arrive, so I had to have yet another change of numbers to get the pack, card and HEX/GEX vouchers. The annoying thing is I had a 009005....number, but now I am not even in the 900 club as my number is now 00901.....
Hey ho, but at least I have the right card and stuff now!

Me too - well sort off - got my gold renewal in March - then got a Silver in May, and in July got a 'new' Gold . . . me finks someone in FC does not know their 'cough' from their elbow.
However I had manually inputted my Original Gold FC number to all my bookings and it works (number is still live)

As long as it starts 009 then it's all good!

Well it's the right colour, but IMHO everything else about that 'new' card is wrong!!! [n]

IIRC:
FC Red starts 006
FC Ag starts 008
FC Au starts 009
Anyone know what happened to 007? (Special tier reserved for members of MI6?)
