Cool does that mean staff get free UC flights or is there a catch?

All staff receive a certain amount of free-of-charge standby tickets - you only pay tax for each ticket. Just remember that these are standby tickets and not confirmed.
Space available (ie. if there are no seats empty, you don't get) upgrades to Upper Class are only available after working for VS for a certain amount of time - normally a couple of years.

Ok ok, so you dont get discounts on fares if you want to pay for a confirmed ticket?

You can buy 'Mates' fares which are confirmed economy tickets which are often the same price as the cheapest fare anyone could find if they searched the internet for fares.

... and the only way to get a confirmed upper class ticket is to buy one, just like anyone else.
