I just booked a seat in upper for a trip from LHR to BOS on Sunday October 3. While booking all indications were that we would be flying on a 747-400 however, when it came time to select seats, the map was for an A340-300. Does anyone know how I can figure out what type of aircraft I will be on? Thanks.

If your seat plan is showing an A340-300, then its scheduled to be that aircraft. Unless of a technical fault / increased load demand / some other VS reason it is usually pretty unlikely that it will change!
So looking like an A340-300 for you! According to the Which Aircraft? tool...
Aircraft %
Airbus A340-300 70%
Airbus A340-600 29%

I think VS used to fly a 744 Fridays to Mondays and then a 343 for the rest of the week for the BOS route, however, VS seem to be switching all the 744's for 346's (or in your case a 343) recently on this route.
I'm flying out on a Friday and back on a Monday at the end of April and when I booked both legs where originally a 744 but now the A/C has changed to a 346 both ways in my booking, even though if you do a dummy booking for the same dates on the VS website, it tells you it will be a 744.
The seat map config you see will be the A/C you are due to fly on.

I wouldn't be so sure that what he seat plan is showing is the plane you will be on.
I know from personal; experience that the type of plane frequently changes on the Boston route.
We are going in September and are currently showing a 747 both ways. When I booked, the outbound was on a baby bus They seem to use the 747s in the fall, but still swap quite a bit - presumably based on loads.
Although the V-Flyer tool is showing just Airbuses on this route - that is based on recent data.
Keep an eye on your booking as, although VS are very quick to tell you about schedule changes, they obviously don't let you know about equipment changes, as this information doesn't materially affect your journey.

Even though you are not informed about it, A/C type changes do show up in your booking as it comes up with a changed flight when you log in, but with exactly the same departure/arrival times as your original flights.
What I meant to say was the the seat map will be the A/C VS have scheduled on that route at the time you are looking at your booking. The seat map info is always more accurate than the A/C type info you get during the booking process.

The aircraft frequently changes on the day itself on the Boston route. I have turned up at LHR many a time expecting to be on a 343 and have flown on a 346.
