O fare upgraded to Y on VS10

Sitting here at gate B28 at JFK kicking myself that I didn't bother looking at my boarding pass before going through security - I just realised that my O fare has been upgraded to a Y class as I'm guessing the loads are very light on this flight. If only I had seen it at CI I might have been able to upgrade to PE with miles - apparently this can't be done the gate.

Always check you boarding passes folks!!!

When it comes to boarding passes, VS only print either Y, W or J on them for each cabin regardless of the actual fare you have booked.

Regards

Was once told that the reason 'J' goes on all purple boarding cards is so that cabin crew don't differentiate between say 'J's to 'G's ...

I wouldn't say that is the reason at all as only one cabin crew member sees your boarding card as you board and then you put it away when you sit down and no one sees it again!

I'd say it is just to standardise things for the passenger as most people outside of the V-Flyer world have no idea about ticket classes - they just know they are travelling Upper, Premium or Economy.

Except that at some stations the check in desk write your actual fare code on the ticket. It has happened to be twice at EWR (once on a Z and latterly on a G)

Why they do this is a total mystery !

Same as you Tonty (NOT at EWR tho as I hate flying from there so avoid it)

Happens frequently from the USA that they put a big J on front of the BP and I have no idea why and same again on Lounge invites :?

At EWR (and I like flying from there :) ) they always write your fare code on the lounge invite and then also on the pax list print out at the desk. I don't know what they do with it but I always like to peer over and see the combo of J, D, R, Z and G - often surprised at how many actual J's there are, though suspect a lot are on corporately negotiated fares.

I think it's because IIRC op-ups do not get access to the Clubhouse so by writing the fare code on the boarding card, they can see that the person has paid for Upper and is therefore entitled to use the lounge.
