Is anyone else experiencing difficulties with the speed of the new site?

It seems to slow my browser down tremendously when I'm navigating around.

The server should be a lot faster, but there is considerably more 'going on' on the page, so if your machine is getting - um, "older" - then it might not have the oomphf to cope with all the Javascript.

I might look into a preference panel so you can turn off things like the bottom bar, as removing the chat feature will probably make slower machines run better.

Ok, implemented a quick fix for this - on your profile page (next to your avatar at the top), there's now a link to toggle your chat bar (the one running along the base of the page) on or off; if you're experiencing speed issues on a slower machine, turning off the chat bar should help.

As this is a cookie-based preference, it'll turn off the bar on a machine-by-machine basis rather than all machines you login from.

I have done this and it has speeded up a fraction but still very slow on loading pages and replyiny esp (hence you havent sen much of me on here recently as it takes a long time and I cant access it from my office network now)

Although semi-seriously, if V-Flyer is so slow it's unusable, I do wonder what you're running over there. Is it coal powered? B)

I think the 'staff' have been buying poor quality coal !

Maybe Ian needs to do some basic PC maintenance - do a defrag, clear his cache etc

You are both probably right - I have a SOny Vaio VGNA17S - prob 5 years old and as for mainteneance and all that - mmmm never (wouldnt know where to start). I think a trip to Selfridges for a new laptop but it is strange that all other sites I visit are fine and fast . . . .

5 years old? Yes - time to nip to the shops, m'dear. Laptops, especially (with their lower-power CPUs), from 2005 are not going to have the 'oompf' a man of your standing in the community needs

Tempted by a MacBook Pro? Runs both Mac and Windows OS, and it's what all the cool kids are using now...

As the top IT Guru around these parts - can you just tell me what to buy please as I am sure it will fit for my purpose (I dont need to know all the odds and sods andthree letter acronyms etc as it is a foreign language to me and one I have no interest in learning tbh)

Rather than sit on the sidelines this time, I will tell you now, Pete and the rest of the gang will say Macbook Pro.

However, for someone of your standing, I would say go over an Alienware M17X, it's the type of computer (laptop) that laughs at Macbook, chews them up, then produces a very nice photoshop picture of the Macbook looking very silly.

Actually, to be fair to the Macbook pro, there is NO laptop that can keep up with a M17X.

Ah, but Scrooge luv, Ian wants to get online and do emails. He's not playing BioShock 2 or in needs to overclock his CPUs with a watertower attached.

Actually, I think Ian would be better off with a desktop at home and an iPad for out-and-about. Probably be cheaper too, but both devices would suit their purpose better than compromising on a laptop for all jobs.

pages are painfully slow on my machine too, just tried that speed test and its given me 2.97 seconds

One hidden feature of the forum is that the 'default' phpbb3 template is still lurking in the background, and whilst it means you won't give you all the links back to the main site and toolbox, it may be stripped down enough to make the forum a bit quicker on your machine
