So it transpires no one is flying anywhere today or anytime soon.
Spoke to FC and all flights have massive wait lists from tomorrow onwards, so looks like an enforced weekend in LA as first bookable availability is Monday.
if you find yourself stuck in LA say Hi who knows we can grab a drink, spirit of the blitz and all that

I'm likely to be stuck in Toronto, so I am thinking how I can go south and then into mainland Europe, as I dsuspect it will be asier to get home than wait 4 or 5 days here !

Firstly, I need some material thats in the UK, and secondly, I'll miss a trip on an A380, and thirdly, I may find my key may not work the front door when I get home.
The last time I got stuck anyware, it was a 600 mile dash in a car on snowy roads a trip to Ronald Reagan airport, an Avis car to Dulles by way of the Air and Space museum to land 24 hours later on Christmas Eve.
Virgin were great, allowing me to change my flight FOC.
I feel another challenge coming on, otherwise it's going to be pretty dull being in Toronto this weekend.

Quite a lot of travel insurance policies won't cover this, as it's an 'Act of God'. Insurance companies aren't known for their compasion when their goal is tp make a quick buck.

'Act of God' clauses being checked ... m'learned friends no doubt being consulted that volcano ash falls in in this category ... no flights due to NATS grounding the air space not a decision of airlines.
So I can imagine some sympathy from the insurance companies but not a lot of £££

Friends stuck somewhere warm have been told they will have to fund their own accommodation costs while they wait to go back.

Did the do DIY, or through a package? Interested to find out what the tour companies are doing at the moment.

As far as I know it was through a tour package - though I don't know which one. She just posted a FB message saying they wouldn't be given any help with accommodation costs given it was a natural disaster.

Sounds like poor customer service to me. Natural disaster or not, I'd say if you're on a package, they're duty-bound to look after you until they can get you on a flight home. Now, granted, that may mean having to put you up in a Travelodge next to the airport rather than swanky accommodation in Disney, but still - pretty poor show if they're not looking after customers.

I agree entirely, Pete. Said friend is very savvy about being assertive with 'authority' people so I'm sure she's pushed the rep in resort all the way.

Hi folks. Been following this story closely as I shuttle back and forth JFK-LHR monthly on VA. Was due to head out on yesterday's VS9.
As per the Icelandic Meteo office interviewed this morning on BBC News, "Matthew Roberts" from the Icelandic Met Office - a very Icelandic name

reports that the volcanic plume is between 3-5km in height and is "ash-poor" - mostly steam. Last time this volcano erupted was 1821, at which time it erupted "intermittently" - if indeed that happens again, Iceland could once again have a significant impact on the economy of Europe :~)
Chin up, folks!
