The red marks you see around the UCS normally where the water bottle goes are not pen marks.

They are red nail varnish from the ladies nails.

Prior to boarding the crew prepare the cabin, placing the menus. amenity kits, headsets and water bottles in each seat.

The result as the place the water in the holder is nail polish rubbing against the panel!

Hope that clears up the mystery of the red pen marks!

It certainly makes more sense that UC being full of teachers marking poor essays....

I remember that my ucs from my last trip in 2008 had several blue biro marks on the wall next to the tv screen.... I did idly wonder why the cleaning crew hadn't got some sort of cleaning gear and wiped them off...

Aha! Was there some internal VS detective work going on to find this?

This would also explain why ANZ weren't getting the red marks, as their crew don't tend to wear red nail polish as much.

Thanks Declan, I guess if you looked at the consistent positions of these red marks you might have guessed this was the cause! Must say I have never noticed them myself but then I am not flying so much these days.

To be honest I'd never noticed the red pen marks. I must be very unobservant

It's not just the crew, because of the confined space nails tend to scratch against the plastic trim however hard you try to stop it happening - you just have to turn over or reach out to turn the light on/off. You see it in offices all the time around the light switches or lift buttons.
