Yes you can take a handbag in addition to your carry-on allowance

Yes you can take a handbag as well as a carryon bag. You are allowed one personal item and a handbag is classed as that.
The only exception I am aware of is Ryanair which allows only one bag and you put your handbag into your carryon until on board!

From Darrens link -
A handbag, pocketbook or purse i.e. which is appropriate to normal travelling dress and is not being used as a container for the transportation of articles which could otherwise be regarded as baggage.
So by implication something
small.
I always thought a handbag should be small enough to fit in the hand and contain items a lady would need for a few hours away from home and not some of these massive things I see women walking around with where they can't find anything they need (like a purse or oyster card) and, despite having placed each and every item in the bag themselves, complain about how big, bulky and heavy they are.
But I'm a man so what do I know?

Like people have said, yes a handbag is allowed bar exceptions of ryanair etc.
As a fellow woman though I do advise not to take anything too big full of junk as you would day to day. We've all done the handbag clearout, finding old train tickets, old food, handcream bottles with nothing left in etc...! There's nothing worse than having to drag a carry on around and a handbag full of stuff you don't need as well, definitely stick to the essentials!!

Blimy Lizz !
Commensense advice that every lady should follow (but for some reason wont!).
I mean why would they think that a used tissue, bus ticket from 3 years ago, 17 pens and empty bottles of various unguents ever come in useful?.
MacGyver might possible find a use for these items but the average woman more than likely wont.

I find buying a new handbag for each trip avoids most of the above problems

I just bought a new handbag the other day, it's so nice to not reach in and find chewing gum that fell out the packet around christmas time which has been squashed
Give it a couple of months though...
