any idea why the go around was necessary?

It did land hard.

Also, difficult to tell from the angle but at 1:16 there is a white service vehicle in shot. Somewhere it shouldn't have been?

Did it land hard? There's no apparent reason in the video for the go around?

is it just me or the angle but the wheels dont look fully deployed to me

Looks like Long Island in the background so she's landing on 33L.
If its the normal landing time, winds had just started to gust to over 20kts W - that's over the autoland crosswind limit.
Ok for a manual landing but perhaps a sudden gust caught them out.

Always best to come down firmly with a cross wind.

Darren - It does look suspiciously like that truck was on the 27 which intersects with 33....but it could be on the service road - taken with a very long lens.

If you watch the video carefully, you'll notice that the aircraft touches down then goes straight back up into the air, very little time (a second maybe) on the ground.

What does this mean ?

Well simply, the decision had already been made to go around, it takes more than a second for the engines to respond to the pilots request for TOGA power (5 seconds is the maximum allowed)

If you watch it in 720P at the 7 second mark you will see the engines start to spool up, the aircraft does not touch down till the 10 second mark and is airborne again at 12 seconds, so 2 to 3 seconds to get the thrust and speed back up.

Why did it go around, well either something on the runway or simply the PIC wasn't happy with the way the landing was going.

Just listened to the ATC feeds for boston tower then boston departures according to the pilot he suffered from windshear on approach so called for a go around.

Yes I was sad enough to listen!!

You could see the wind effect as she lifts away.

My wife and son were on that plane (Madame Butterfly)...but, 3 hours later for the VS12 BOS-LHR

Thanks for bringing those websites to my attention though. My office overlooks the approach for BOS and I watch the planes go past my window all day...now I can have a different soundtrack!
