V-Flyer

Howdy,

I've been monitoring this site for a while now, and to say that I think it is brilliant is a bit of an understatement!

I'm just curious to know whether anyone has any idea if Virgin and even the V-flyer app are going to me made for the android phones? My wife has them for her iPhone & I'm a tad jealous.

It would make sense as they are now more popular than the iPhone but don't have that buzz or coolness Virgin strive for so I wouldn't hold your breath ...

Well (fingers crossed) I will be picking up an Evo in the next week or so, so you can bet I will be beating Pete over the head to get one up and running.

With that said, right now he is tied up with work (as in the thing that pays the bills rather than sucks the wallet dry) so I wouldn't hold my breath, but as you pointed out, Android powered phones are becoming more and more common, so it's a pretty natural thing for both Virgin and V-Flyer to look at.

I think more regular travelers will be on Android rather than iPhone, because you can buy them factory unlocked and swap out SIM's abroad. No need to be forced to pay your providers exorbitant international roaming charges!

I'm using a Google Nexus One and love it. Google Voice international calls for 2c/ minute, factory unlocked phone, swappable battery, full navigation, perfect maps and gmail integration, and a huge App Store... I am convinced the Android platform is the future, and Apple will be forced to change its game plan by the tsunami of Android loaded phones arriving. Locking users to one carrier/plan/high prices will not work when open platforms are available with a wide choice of compelling smartphones.

I bought my iPhone "SIM free" from the Apple Store. You save a whole £30 buying it from a carrier on PAYG.

On a similar note does anyone have an idea if and when a BlackBerry version will be produced. Judging by the number of Blackberries I see at the beginning and end of every flight, it must fit the VS flying demographic nearly as well as the iPhone and Android users.

I just check on BlackBerry App World and Virgin Trains and Virgin Australia have managed it, so what about Virgin Atlantic?

There's even an app with a guide to the Virgin Islands !

There is a tool you should investigate that will let you develop tools for iOS, Android and Blackberry all at once, using HTML5.

You can utilise frameworks within it such as jQuery mobile and Sencha Touch, which then allow you to develop a touch UI suitable for smartphones and tablets, pull in JSON queries nice and easily, and do it for all platforms at once.

Sounds way too advanced for me! I've also been wondering why Blackberries are viewed as the poor relation where Virgin apps are concerned... but then again, my Blackberry doesn't seem to work its apps properly anyway - so perhaps it's more the user than the product!

The comment someone earlier made about buying an HTC sim free and using for roaming..... is this something I could do in the UK too? I've still got a year to run on my Blackberry and have become seriously disillusioned with it, but if I could a get sim-free Android, that might just be the answer. My contract is with Virgin, so if I have that right, I could buy another phone and put my old Virgin sim in and bob would be my sister's brother???? Please don't sigh in despair - I don't want to be wrong about this.... :#
