Hi all,

There's a possibility that a client will be buying me a ticket to NYC in November using their miles. Would it be possible for me to upgrade this ticket using my miles after the purchase (with allowance for taxes and code availability etc)? I didn't know whether there are any rules in place against this.

That's a good question and one I haven't heard before.

And, I see no reason why not. If your ticket is a miles redemption, you should easily be able to use your own miles to upgrade to a higher cabin ... availability permitting of course and you'll have some additional tax to pay!

That is a good question, and I would be interested to know the official answer. Like slinky, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to, but you never know with VS.

I guess it would be akin to sharing miles, aka one partner books a redemption, another contributes to the upgrade. As long as it's done with equal measure of miles from one account or another, that's fine?

Hmm. Not sure about this. A couple of times I've booked a PE miles ticket when there was no G (upper) available. At a later point, when more G's were released, the original miles were refunded and the new, higher miles deducted - not just the difference between the two.

i booked a reward flight a few years back using my wifes FC miles. i tried to upgarde at LGW using my account ans was told no.it had to be the same account

But the correct number of miles were deducted at the end?

Probbaly better for VS to refund the PE miles in full then deduct the UC miles in full.

That is what I thought, also just like using miles from 2 different accounts for a round trip upgrade or reward flight.

Yes, the correct miles were deducted, but that's not quite the point.

IF, when you try to upgrade to a G whilst already holding a U booked by someone else - I think the lower miles redemption is refunded. This has happened to me before where I have used my miles for the Daught.

So I think in this case the original miles redemption would be returned to the OP's client account. But I don't know this for a fact, just hypothesising based on personal experience of changing U redemptions to G's.
