Tier points on partner airlines

Hello all,

I've been a guest on these pages for many years... I'm excited to join finally... and I do so hoping someone can help me with a question.

I flew on Hawaiian SFO-OGG last month. I was in economy, on a fare code that didn't qualify for VS partner miles. However, I'd hoped that the flight would still qualify for tier points (I'm a whisker away from Gold... managing the tier points in tricky business!).

I've been checking my account periodically since and seen nothing added. I called VS customer service today and was told that although it's not actually written anywhere on the site, you can only qualify for tier points if the partner flight also qualified for miles.

Apart from being disappointed to hear this (I had genuinely picked HA on the basis that I would earn these points) I was also dubious about the quality of the information (initially the person I spoke to denied that Hawaiian was even a partner airline).

Does anybody have experience of this? Do I definitely not earn the tier points? And if so, why isn't this made clearer?

The call was soured further when I suggested this be made clearer on the site and wondered if she'd like to pass that on and she said "it would be best if you did that"!

Just one of those little moments of disappointment because that's always the attitude I expect from other airlines and somehow imagine VS to be better...

Anyway. Thanks for any help you can give...

Hi. Welcome to V-Flyer. :)

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it is there, albeit buried in the Terms and Conditions.

http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/en/gb/fr ... itions.jsp 3.3.4.

Basically, to earn tier points with partner airlines (other than Singapore) the flight must earn miles as well.

Boo. Well I thought I'd combed through those Ts and Cs and must have skipped that one as I thought it was relevant to Singapore only. I think this could be made a lot clearer... not least on the page about earning Tier Points on partner airlines!

Thanks Darren!

I would never expect unless I saw it clearly stated that I could so. If you really are a fraction away from a threshold, wouldn't you find out for sure, rather than being so passive as to say that since you couldn't see anything you 'hoped' for the best???

Wow. Well I thought my issue here was with VS, but thanks for piling in and being so welcoming to a new member!

To be fair, it is very clear here: http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/en/gb/fr ... rtnertiers that you do earn tier points on an economy fare flying over 2,000 miles. Nowhere does it refer me to terms and conditions. So I thought this was reasonable grounds for hope, yes.

peted - unfortunately sometimes life just 'ain't like that', it's not about piling in but more about checking the nth degree before you book. My reading of the T&Cs says 'unsure = check' and that's what I would have done before spending my money.

PS Welcome to V-Flyer :D
