I need to get to and from Somerset next month and it looks like the total distance is 105 miles each way.

I m planning on Has anyone paid the excess recently? I was wondering exactly how they calculated it and when it was paid.

Thanks

105 miles is approximately £25 - payable to the driver by card on the day.

From this page on VS

CAN I TRAVEL BEYOND THE RANGE OF THE FREE CHAUFFEUR CAR?

In the UK, New York, Narita, Shanghai, Delhi, South Africa and Sydney only, it is possible to arrange for the chauffeur driven car to take you beyond these ranges. Excess charges will apply, which will be advised to you when you book your chauffeur driven car. Charges can be paid direct to the driver/chauffeur company using a credit card.

So they will be able to tell you when you book - so best give them a ring.

For me, the whole CDC thing is a bit of a rip-off (from near Ipswich,Suffolk) - I got a quote of £200 in total from vhols, when they were doing the whole CDC thing for their FVC members. I decided the other discounts were way better value.. Given I can get a local CDC for a not too dissimilar price in a Mercedes or better via the company chaeffeur service of the company I work for (who allow private bookings a few times a year for staff as a perk)- its not exactly value.

Equally I can't see myself ever booking a D or other "unrestricted" upper seat for same reason - a Z does me with above.

Is there any difference in ex-mileage rate for virgin atlantic than vhols though?

We are in a similar position; given that I can rustle up a decent service from near Cambridge to Heathrow for around £100 I've shied away from extending our reward bookings with CDC, as not only would it be 17,500 miles but then cash on top. Don't think I'll ever be in a position to book a ticket that comes with CDC included though. :D

I did, however, take the plunge and use miles to book the CDC service from SFO to Santa Rosa in the summer. After a lot of indecision around trying to decide whether it was more rational to use cash or miles, having the service managed by the VS team meant that we didn't have to faff around at the far end.

I was quoted a charge of £143 for an excess mileage of 61 miles each way!

Back in 2002 when I first travelled UC, I had a CDC on a Z. Back in the days when you got Ozswald Boateng cufflinks, an amenity kit, freedom menu.....

I doubt you were on a Z if you got CDC; in 2002 the only fares that were eligible were J and D - R has only recently become a CDC fare.

Does anyone know what Tristar charges for a 140 mile each way pickup from Heathrow?

Seems like it would be cheaper to book directly rather than pay for a free car!
