I am bored, with unlimited queries on ExpertFlyer.

So I did what any aviation geek would do... check flight delays, flight by flight.

LOL - Sealink - you need to get out more. :D :X oo)

Things to do on a sunny Sunday. 8D

Some interesting stats, but the overriding one seems to be - If you fly VS, you are going to be late - it is only the amiount that varies. ):

The biggest variables for me though, when I travel to the US is the length of the immigration queue and the time baggage takes to appear - there are no stats for them.

I know that Expertflyer covers TSA Wait times - perhaps you could get them to cover the Immigration & Baggage times too :w :w

All interesting! But why is it no flight, with any airline, seems to leave on time? Why advertise take off times if it is not going to happen??

I sometimes take EF stats with a pinch of salt ... but then again I've taken off on a VS flight from Heathrow 20+ times this year and can recall only a small number that left on time.

So VS has a particularly bad problem at its home airport, given that Heathrow congestion, weather, odd events etc. can play their part.

I particularly galls me, when sitting comfortably in the lounge, being urged to leave as quickly as possible because the 'gate is closing', to find that 30 minutes after scheduled departure there's still ground staff in the cockpit sorting out paperwork ... hmmm ?|

However, all things considered, VS pads its scheduled out sufficiently to ensure that many flights arrive on time ... then, as Nick says, it's down to the welcome that the US or other countries want to give us ii) .

Any idea how much of this delay is down to ATC or Airport operator issues and how much is down to VS and VS pax (e.g. not getting to gate on time) issues?

How do these delays compare to BA, UA, AA etc etc ?

No idea.

And in the best traditions of Virgin, I will update Manchester flight stats at a later date. HAha.

I can check other airlines too... I am that bored today!

Was more just a rhetorical question really.

But it does help to compare with other airlines and identify the cause (especially if it pax caused)

E.G. How many people on that recent VS flight that was diverted to Gander to offload a pax would have blamed VS for the late arrival (and probbaly the next departure) rather than the pax?

Unscientifically my recollection is:

no. 1 reason - paperwork
no. 2 reason - something going on in the hold
no. 3 reason - tech. issue

So, all under VS control.

Damn statistics might confound me though, I certain am aware of airfield congestion as a factor.

Much easier to get someone else to do the work:
CAA

Tried to upload the analysis table but it's just too big.
Put the above into Excel, select all the data then Insert:Table.
You can then choose Airline, Airport etc and get a full report of delays, Arrival & Departure.

Particular routes like MCO can have particular reasons for delays but comparisons are interesting -

Just to be very geeky - an analysis of all airlines, average delays, on USA flights:

I don't think I have ever been that bored but good job Sealink.

I would be interested to see what the average delay is for LAS / LGW. Always seem my flights are heavilly delayed or am I just unlucky?

What is more important to me is not the actual delay to any of my flights but whether the time can be made up in the air.

Airfield/ATC delays are not the airlines fault and are logged so. Doors closed time is what matteers to them and what is reported internally.

The 33 min average delay for VS LAS/LGW is in the table above

Below are the Number of flights, % on time, Average delay minutes.
A/D: Arrival Departure are for UK airports - the FAA figures will be needed to get the US arrivals hence flight times but they only do domestic :(!

Virgin seem to have their timetable better calculated than BA
VS have delays of 32mins arrival & 34mins departure while the 54min arrival delay for BA harms their average.

That delay is further exacerbated by arrival into LHR - the times below are based on Gate time but are calculated from runway arrival/departure minus/plus the average taxi times.
An extra 25minutes added to a LHR departure - only 17mins to LGW. see here

LAS VEGAS 861 49% 38
GATWICK
VS 726 55% 33
A 363 57% 32
D 363 53% 34

HEATHROW
BA 135 44% 43
A 67 36% 53
D 68 51% 34
