Lots of regular travelers on here, so might I ask who recommends what, and at what cost?

I did mine via http://www.moneysavingexpert.com and ended up with 'one'.

I can't remember exactly how much I got it for - it was around the £40 - £50 mark, was for my wife and I, and worldwide but not with the winter sports extra.

Edit: Just checked - I got it for less than I thought! £38.43

We used Columbus Direct this time as I had some medical issues other companies wouldn't cover and this company did. They also cover for up to 60 days per trip which is very excellent. Everything can be done online which is really good as all the others we tried we had to phone.

I think for the 2 of us without the extra for existing medical conditions would have been around the £90. It was very good with the extras too.

We used Direct Travel before.

I get ours "free" as part of my amex plat yearly cost - never had any problems claiming on it.

I have used Amex for many years - around £90 but I upped it this year to include the #1 and cover all business expenses.

Never had to claim (x-fingers), and I went for Amex believing in the solidity of the company and the services they provide, I've always had good service from other Amex products.

I'm with Natwest. Pay £10 a month which entitles me to a few 'freebies.' The only ones I use are the phone insurance (which had cost me £12 a month with Vodafone) and yearly travel insurance for me and the other half. I'm yet to need their identity fraud insurance and other bits and bobs!

I have used the one that comes "free" with my Natwest Black Card - claimed for one medical emergency and a few times for stolen things from my suitcase after a TSA inspection with no bother.

Most if not all of the "Bank based" deals use 3rd party supply, so as soon as you claim, the original bank will wash their hands of any involvement no matter how grand they promote it. READ THE SMALL PRINT IN DETAIL WITH ANY POTENTIALS..you can then appreciate the squirming routes....
Have to agree with others on the Amex route, as it showed many companies true colours with the ash cloud incident.
I personally only use Netto's off-yellow MDF card and its associated fridge benefits however the criteria to join can be very elitist. :w )

Another vote for Columbus - Husband has asthma - no problem with cover there and one of the few companies who actually know what Snowmobiling is (classed as an extreme sport) and no problems with cover for that either. Think we pay about £125 Worldwide/Annual/Extreme Sports.

Interesting short article in Sunday Times today about travel insurance & "bank" freeby "cover"

Direct Travel with no probs for the last 5 years .Once you've read the (very) small print ,the bank "freebies" ( even for the supposedly top tier accounts) don't actually cover you for all eventualities (or anythimg remotely close).

Unfortunately I am in the US, and... Amex platinum here does NOT have travel insurance (well not the full medical one you get in the UK, just lost baggage/ delay cover) bit of a reverse of the usual order! - You are getting a fabulous coverage, and we get nowt. n(

we do gain more points per $ spent, which is nice, but the coverage for self+ family offsets that high annual fee nicely, and its a shame not to find it on the USA version.

We have been with Direct Travel for a number of years without any problems, including pre-existing conditions :0
