Hi Dave
If this is your trip booked through Vhols your paid updgrade opportunities are probably a bit slim. You are probably on a fare that you can't upgrade from with cash, although you might be offered on the day upgrades at the airport if loads are light, A free one - almost definitely not. Virgin only do free upgrades based on operational necessity, and then there will be a pecking order. Birthdays, honeymoons, etc don't come into it.
If you post what cabin you are currently booked into someone can give you an idea of what on the day upgrades to the next cabing are usually priced at. these will be non negotiatable.

Currently in the back. We have 2 seats together. 3 rows from the tail I think. We are thinking of getting the exit rows for extra legroom if we can

if thats 62 on a 747 they are pretty good Econ seats. you can stretch your legs out up the side of the seat in front

As RedVee says VS dosen't 'do' free upgrades unless absolutly operationally essential e.g. it has over sold the Econ Cabin in which case it might move people from PE to UC and Econ to PE.
Even then, there is a ranking system based on FC status and fare bucket of their tickets.
It being a special ocassion won't help either (people are always getting married or having significant birthdays / anniversaries etc) nor will getting to the airport super early and wearing a suit.
All you can do is ask at the airport how much it might be or check in 'manage my bookings' if you booked direct with VS as there are sometimes offers there, as there might be at OLCI.

I'd do the OLCI. Bird in the hand and all that.

I think tha s a load of nonsense <insert ruder word here>!
I have done OLCI and then asked at LHR re upgrade and this didn't cause a problem. The original PE Ticket (K) was bought from expedia.
