Tier points wastage?

Apologies if this has been discussed before, but just wanted to check the situation on tier points:

I achieved Gold status in August 2010 and reached the 30 tier points on 2nd January this year, so the renewal from Aug 2011 to 2012 will happen. I've just earned another 5 points coming back home, and before August 2011 will probably earn another 20 - 30 points when trips are confirmed.

These points essentially don't do anything do they? They're not carried over or can be used in any other way?

Is this correct? Seems a real shame if so.

Thanks - interesting stuff.

Will be interesting to see how many TP I end up getting by the time the end year one rolls around and if I get anything for it.

Could you have the flights credited to another scheme - e.g. bmi DC and earn status with them once you've already achieved enough TP with VS to renew gold?

Virgin flights don't count for status miles (TPs) with Diamond Club. You'd be better of taking *A flights if you want to earn more from your travel.
