I have options for a quick trip home to Blighty to see the My Old Mum, either Weds 9th or 16th on VS10. Sadly twill be economy, so... is someone able to tell me which is emptier? or a similar flight those evenings (VS46, VS2) Would be lovely to get a few seats to stretch out on, and that might just be possible in midweek early March. Pretty please?

Return would be either 14th or 21st on VS9. same question.
Can ordinary mortals find this out, and if so how?

the 9's mean each class is 9+ seats (possibly just 9, possibly totally empty) - is that right?

I believe its an 'O' ticket and those are all 9's here

yes (at present) there are 9 or more tickets available in each fare bucket. Where the number is 8 or less that is the actual number available.

But you don't add up the seperate buckets to get the number of free seats in that particular cabin.

The load check will show a minimum of 9 seats available in each class. What you are seeing above, is if it says 9, then there are atleast 9 seats on that class, potentially many more, but could be just 10.

O is a discounted economy fare, one of the cheapest but most restricted.

ok - as nearly all have 9+ it seems nobody wants to travel late night midweek in March. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Just to clarify and stress something that tonty said, you do not add up all the 9s . The important letters are J, W and Y which signify UC, PE and economy and the 9 in each means that there are at least 9 seats in each cabin and the other letters show how many seats in each fare bucket can be sold in that bucket. Again, the 9 there shows that there are at least 9 of them. Sometimes you will see the lower ends of each cabin such as the Z, W and N, O etc. zeroed out. This might not necessarily mean that they are sold out but that they are no longer available as they are advance purchase fares. What you will not see is J8, W8, Y8 (or less) and 9s in the other buckets.

Generally speaking though when you see 9s across all the cabins it means that the flight is wide open

Just to update - I bought a ticket on VS10 for this Weds 9th night, only to find the seat selector showing just one single seat available in the middle of a back row. Perfectly 'orrible!

I appreciate OLCI releases more choices (please!) but really - this appears the most crowded economy ever.
