V-Flyer

I have 3 red select vouchers which I need to use. How easy is it to use them on my preferred route USA somewhere, or would it be easier to just ring up and say where can you send me on a certain date, ie anywhere except Australia.

would depend where and when you want to go.

Seams like avoiding school holidays etc is the best bet aqs well as being flexible in terms of day of the week you want to fly

So based on your reply(thanks) the first 2 weeks in July whilst kids are at school would be better than the last two weeks of summer hold.
I wonder how many of these vouchers are in circulation at any one time?
Is there a set limit of say 10 of them can be used at any time on one flight ? Obviously I understand there must be a limit to numbers on each flight.

Sorry I cant help the OP but may I ask what a "Red Select Voucher" is please ?

It a voucher for a Free* flight anywhere in the VS network except to Australia, it's given out as compensation for canceled flights flights etc.

* They are not actually free flights, they book into reward seats so there is some debate (ok mostly by me about the legal stand point ((in the US)) about calling it free), actually you can also ask for 50k miles to be deposited into your FC account so you can use them at a later date.

I was thinkng they were a type of gift voucher so totaly barking up the wrong tree BTW when I have had a flight cancelled I just took what they offered i.e. from MCO to MIA to LHR rather than the cancelled MCO to LGW. Didnt ask for compensation (as these things happen) but wastnt offered any either

Red Select Vouchers are basically a free ticket on any Virgin route except Sydney. Please anyone correct me if I am wrong but apparently ,as I was told when I was given them, there are no taxes or extras to pay , so free means free. Me , my wife and son were given one each last June when, so we were told, our flight back from Barbados to Manchester had a technical fault and the replacement had fewer seats, a different config from what I could gather. We had the choice of waiting in Grantley Adams indefinitely or getting on a Gatwick flight which was shortly departing. As compensation we were offered the red vouchers or 40000? Miles each. We opted for the voucher which seemed better because no taxes are to be paid on your free flight.
As we were flying PE we were given acces to the BA terraces lounge at Gatwick whilst waiting for our BA flight to Manchester later that day. So very merry I was as we nearly missed our flight up.. Well done Virgin and BA for working well together.

There seams to be a limit on the number per flight (just as there are with reward tickets and drom what was said earlier they come from the same pot)

My advice will be to select a few dates/ destinations that work for you and your family and yes probbaly (but not definitly) more likelyhood of availabilty at non school holiday times.

Might also have to be prepared to have an 'odd' length holiday to get availabilty so 12/13/15 days instead of the usual 14 and travel midweek to midweek than weekend to weekend.

Even though you took the vouchers I think you can still have them changed into miles - again it depends what works best for you and yours.

A few years ago we were given a voucher each (four of us) after volunteering to be bounced from an overbooked flight. We managed to use all four on the same flight LGW - BGI (and return) in the school summer holidays, but as Tonty says we had to be willing to flex our dates / nights away.

You can turn them into miles, but then you will be liable for the taxes on any flights which, IIRC, are not levied if you use the vouchers directly.

We opted to take the late flight from LAX to LHR; in exchange we received the Select Voucher booklet - could choose either a econ return or 40k miles. We went for the miles - more flexibility. We got this for only a 3 hour delay - seems crazy but I think this is a standard scheme; same applies if you volunteer to fly the next day. We lucked in because there are two flights per day from/to LAX. So our UC reward flights cost 100k each but we got back 40k each for an extra 3 hours in the New Zealand lounge - brilliant last day of our honeymoon!

Looks like you did very well with your BGI flights. I think your and Tonty advice re being date flexible is the best approach.

Doubly so as we were co-ordinating with our son's girlfriend who was travelling on FC miles, so we had 5 of the reward seat allocation in Economy. At the time (pre my VF days) I just thought "oh it'll all get sorted out easily"; now I think I'd be on the verge of nervous breakdown trying to make it come together..

Just an update as I have finally got confirmation ( I have just picked our seats)of our free flights using the vouchers.
We fly out to Barbados from Gatwick and then back home from New York to Heathrow, at my request.This works out very well for us as we have always wanted to combine a beach holiday with a city trip.We just fly up to NYC as paying passengers with American Airlines(£150 each). I was not sure if they would do the trip like this but the booking staff were more than helpful.
