Where do DL the elder and I go next?

Time for the annual Jolly Jaunt for DL the Elder and I :D . We had after much deliberation decided on Japan, and then the unfortunate events of the past few days happened.
So where do we go now?
The brief is a destination (or accessible without too much faff) via VS (maximising my AU status as we'll be in W or even Y :0 if we can't bag reasonably priced L fares) and manageable connections .
She won't ever go back to India , China is too recent a trip for her and we both visited Oz and NZ last year.
Help!!!

I wouldn't write off NRT, if anything they will appreciate the visitors, obviously not over the next few weeks, there will be enough bun fights between photojournalists to last a lifetime..Our thoughts goes out to the harrowing scenes..
Tokyo itself isn't too badly affected and Kyoto which would be top of our return wants is unaffected..We have good friends who live out towards NRT, he was at work in Tokyo during the quake, They are all fine although admitted very scary, but life goes on..

Accra is another VS route worth a punt and fairly short flight if stuck away from the pointy bit, Mrs NH keeps nagging me to go back, she lived there for a while, great people, some nice hotels etc, fascinating experience...
I'd avoid Nigeria as a rule (A broad brush statement but experienced first hand in this household)

How about the Caribbean? A week or so in Tobago? Beautiful island :)

Or the Florida Keys via MIA.

Depends if you want the city or would prefer the beach, relax type trip (NRT suggests city).

I know you don't want too much faff but perhaps a VS flight into one of the US hubs then a VX flight? Perhaps LAX into Seattle?

As NH has said, it won't take NRT long to get back to normal. Friend of mine in Tokyo has said that most of the city isn't too bad and will only take a few weeks to get back to normal.

Good luck in the planning!

Gosh, I'm beginning to sound like Mrs Doubtfire! We went to Dubai a few years ago and whilst she enjoyed it overall, she has no desire to return to the UAE (for reasons I won't post publicly).
She's a pretty active 73 yr old, with all her faculties intact, fully mobile and still driving :0
I was thinking about Cuba, but she travelled through the country before it became a popular destination and I don't want her to be disappointed if she returns.

Gosh I sound so hard to please :) . We've already done MIA/Keys several times together and she's been to more Caribbean islands than you could shake a stick at (including Mustique and The Cotton Club - of which am I am majorly jealous ): ).The truth is that DL the Elder has been to most of the destinations that I'd like still like to see .

How about, as one V-Flyer did recently, out to LAX then on to Hawaii?

Or ... Ulusaba?

Now Hawaii's an idea :) (Mr DL also wants to go there). Ulusaba is a non -starter. DL the Elder spent several weeks in Zimbabwe/ Zambia and at Victoria Falls and was glad to leave..
Gosh this is difficult :)

Ah, Rio (and indeed Brazil ) is one of the few S. American countries DL the Elder hasn't been to. How easy is this to do from MIA ?( I can't believe I'm asking this given my view of MIA and its vile immigration staff :(! :(! ).

It is very easy to, though Rio as a whole is not a place I would visit for any extended time, at least not until the world cup goes there and the Rio police force is forced to actually do some police work. Argentina on the other hand is an amazing country.

How about flying into SFO, a quick jump up to Vancouver then take a cruise up to Alaska, the scenery is amazing and it would be a more laid back trip.

Good grief - what a fussy lot ii) I thought that Vic falls, both sides (esp Zim - very partial to that area) was The Most stunning place I have ever stayed and knocks Ulusaba into a cock hat as far as real luxury accommodation and seeing the game is concerned but it is more expensive in Zambia than Ulusaba these days.

Hawaii is beautiful but the trip took more out of me than going to Oz (and I flew in F !) I should have stayed in LA on the way out for a few nights as we really suffered from the 3 flights :#

I do hope you find some where suitable :w :)

Argentina and Vancouver/Alaska are so high on my list!

A good friend of mine recently moved to Buenos Aires and I must say the pictures are amazing!! It is so green and not the baron favela I had perceived it was! Definitely recommended!

More miles if you fly VS to LAX/SFO and on to Hawaii/ Vancouver lol!!

Hi DL

You don't say exactly when you want to go, but I bet she would love the Hamptons. So a relatively short flight to New York, where PE would be perfectly acceptable, and then a short drive.

Reading between the lines I think DL the Elder suffers from the same afflication that affects my 73 year old ex father in law, not something likely to be triggered in the Hamptons ii) . There are some beautiful places to rent, and great restaurants. If you can go shoulder season, you benefit from from improving weather and lower rentals. Beaches, restaurants, scenic - just great for some R&R.

Regards
R3dV

My suggestion is SFO and then VX up to Seattle. It's a lovely city with plenty to do and see. Depending how long you are planning to stay, Vancouver is only about 3 hours away by car and well worth a visit

As is Victoria and I'm sure DL the Elder would approve of afternoon tea at the Empress Hotel overlooking the inner harbour
