Combining miles

I have made a booking for a friend in Premium Economy with my miles.

They have enough miles and there is availability in Upper Class.

However they have just called and they cannot upgrade with their miles and the only option is to refund all my miles and then make a new booking.

However they do not have enough miles.

Is there a way of using their miles to upgrade the ticket?

Thanks

Is it for 1 way or return?

If return, if there are enough miles in each account, one person can by the outward leg and the other the return.

Another option would be for you to use your miles to pay the differece. This might work

Just to clarify

You bought the PE ticket for your friend with YOUR miles?

Your friend has miles but not enough - enough to upgrade the PE ticket to a UC one or just enough to get a PE reward?

As JCBR said YOU could use your miles to 'pay' for the upgrade if you have enough.

Or they could buy the addtional miles needed.

Will also depend on the fare bucket your friends ticket is in.

It could also be that there are no reward seat avaialble (at the moment) in UC for your friend to upgrade into.

I used my miles for the Premium return ticket.

And my friend has enough miles to upgrade both legs to Upper.

Assuming an East coast flight:

Assuming you have paid 60K miles for a PE ticket. Assuming your friend has 30k (the diff between PE and UC redemption).

You can redeem in sectors, but each sector has to be paid for in full from one account. So you could use just 45K to get a 1 way G for your friend, but they would have to top up their 30K miles to 45K to redeem the return.

You cannot upgrade a miles ticket bought by one person with miles from another account - they have given you the correct info.

Might be better for you to redeem a one way G for your friend and for them to use their own miles for a PE return?

What do you mean when you say there is availability in Upper Class? Just because there is availability in Upper Class, it does not necessarily mean that there are reward seats there as only a small number of seats are released on each flight.

The other thing that comes to mind is that if you had been booking UC in the first instance you would not have been able to combine miles. For you and your friends to be able to book using both sets of miles you each would have had to have enough miles for each sector. For example, if the return flight requires 100,000 miles each must pay 50,000 miles per person. If there are two people travelling the combination can be 100K miles from each account or 50K from one account and 150K from another. My take is that by your friends using their miles to upgrade is in fact combining miles which is probably why a new booking is needed

I hope this makes sense
