Expensive combination fare?

Having had some experience of using combianation reward fares already for a recent trip I had another priced up today( LHR- IAD) for DL the Elder and myself's annual jolly jaunt (the trp that was supposed to be to Tokyo) . G class out K class back. The full K class return fare for the dates I'm looking at (currently in the sale) is approx £760 (including all the wretchted taxes, fuel surcharge etc). The cost of using 45,000 FC miles ("purchasing" the outward G leg ) and a one way K class fare inbound comes in at just shy of £620 ( including all the wretched taxes, fuel surcharge etc) which semed a bit steep to me when a return K is less than £150 more. I know the taxes are higher on UC fares but even so ?? ?|
I did query the ammount (twice ) but was told that this was correct and seems a lot more than the combination booking I made previously.
It's not a long flight so UC isn't a really a neccessity ( :0 :0 ) as we'll have the CH both ends, but after my return from LAX last week I am NOT siiting in Y v( .

ISTBC but don't you pay the same tax in PE as UC? It wouldn't surprise me therefore that the difference is relatively small, still it feels a lot because a whole PE return in the sale can be less ... and are you sure you want a K and not a S on the return :w .

Yes APD is in two rates 'lowest' and 'other'. Other covers anything that is not economy so applies to both PE and UC.

The Fuel surcharge is different though. Dummy booking LHR-IAD return in UC comes out as £ 255 but for PE(and Y) = £ 175

Plus there is the general 'fares are not as cheap as they used to be anymore' factor too.

Well funnily enough I did get it priced :w . The S return portion was actually worth considering - unfortunately the increase in taxes/fees to move to a G with miles was (IMHO) ridiculous. Have I missed something - a one way move to UC with miles costs an EXTRA £350 in taxes (on top of the S fare)????
