VS10 very delayed. no food vouchers, no compensation?

My friend was on VS10 last night, JFK to LHR, it didnt push back till 4.5hours after its supposed departure time. That's a shift from 10.30pm to 3.00am. Pretty painful to wait at JFK for so long at that hour of the night.

Does anyone have an idea what to do in the way of requesting compensation. Apparently no vouchers were issued, or anything offered.

I apprecaite there were storms in the area, but still its a long & late time to wait.

I think in the big picture, and the awful storms on the East Coast lest night, that isn't a massive delay.

YMMV, but I wouldn't expect anything.

Having had a similar situation myself on the last trip to NY, I would feel lucky to even be home with a delay. We sat on the taxiway for near on 9 hours and then the crew ended up with insufficient hours and fuel to complete the trip. We went back to the gate and had a night in a hotel. The other two later flights due to depart JFK that night had to stop in SNN for fuel.

4.5 hours delay isnt so long.

Would rather be safe than trying to take off in a storm. Looks like it was pretty bad, flooding, trees down and areas without power. Nearly 2 inches of rain in Central Park

The same storm system that caused tornadoes in Mid West and has killed at least 37 people

Nick think you mean 'wouldn't' expect anything (though mea culpa if I'm wrong)

According to this on the Air Transport Users Council your friend was entitled to this at the airport - 'meals / refreshment in relation to waiting time and 2 free phonecalls/emails/fax/telex' I base this on JFK-LHR being over 3,500 KM.

As to compensation, the delay would need to be 4 hours plus to get 600 euro but that is only if the cause is within the airline's control.

Bad weather is specifically mentioned as an exclusion from the compensation arrangements so I'm afraid your friend is entitled to nothing.

If it is weather related, then it's out of VS's hands and therefore delay compensation rules do not apply - although ISTBC. That said, VS is often more accommodating than this.

Thanks for replies. I don't think she expects $ compensation, just a modest meal/refreshments voucher would have been nice. I thought it was automatic that these were handed out.

I agree 4+ hours isnt so awful, but there's 4+ hours in the middle of the afternoon, when you can browse and graze, and there's 4+ hours in the wee hours of the night, when its far more painful.

Anyways, thanks for the advise.

If she has reasonable receipted expenses for food/drinks that shes bought then make a complaint in writing and enclose them and I should think it's quite possible that they would reimburse them? Otherwise, I think that unfortuately the onus is probably on the passenger to find some staff at the airport to complain and request food/drink vouchers at the time.
