VS900 LHR - NRT cancelled today (18 Apr) due volcanoes!

Just had a call from a customer, they sat onboard for 2 hours before returning to gate and it being blamed on volcanic activity!
The strange thing is that none of the Japanese news sites are saying anything and the Japanese airlines haven't heard and are flying as normal! As far as we can see there is one volcano pluming but at the other end of the country and as happens all the time.

Not good for Japan at the moment....

I guess it's just a case of VS not wanting to take the risk of a costly divert, especially if loads are light at the moment which I imagine they are.

Logistically it would be a lot easier for a Japanese carrier to divert to another regional airport and unlike VS, would have ground staff to deal with pax onward travel.

Shinmoedake/Sakurajima do seem to be huffing and puffing a bit.

Can't see anything in the notams for NRT tho'.
Are VS still landing for crew change before going into Tokyo due to radiation?

Thanks Tinks,
Perhaps they are expecting a wind change - the videos above do seem to show lots of ash going into the air.
Would not like to fly through that!
