Fleet Ages

Bar the new Man/Or 330s, what are the newer 600s?

(I'm sure I could find this in the toolbox myself... just ebing lazy :) )

I believe RED, BUG and WEB are the newest three 340-600s.

The 744 list shows Lady Penelope has just turned 17 years while Mustang Sally is a youngster at 7.5 years old.

The key thing about aircraft age is the interior. Joe public will decide an aircraft is 'elderly' if it doesn't have the latest IFE and it's interior fittings are looking a bit dated. Take a look at the Skytrax reviews of the LGW/MAN fleet, those aircraft are generally less than 10 years old I believe.

I flew to JFK and back recently, outbound was Cover Girl (A346) delivered Nov 2002, inbound was Mustang Sally (B747) delivered Oct 2003. However, the Airbus felt much more modern inside.

Has anyone else noticed that VS has been steadily getting rid of the 'airborn since xxx' sticker on the side of the planes, they seemed to have started to disappear around 2 years ago on aircraft that are still flying around in older liveries. IIRC G-VFAB never had one, however I think the LGW fleet has lost them now as well.

The interiors on the 744s look dated in part because of the fittings that are used by Boeing. Remember the basic fittings of the 744 have not changed for well over 30 years. Granted some interiors are newer etc but they have been using the same internal paneling, same cabin bin layouts etc. To me all 744's inside just looked dated and very 'dindgy' when compared to a 346 or the new sky interiors launched by Boeing recently. In fact to show the difference the interior makes to an aircraft- look at some of the before and after shots on a.net of the 737s retrofitted with sky interiors- its quite remarkable how much the interior influences your perception. I think this has a part to play on the perceived age of the aircraft.
