Expiry Date on VS Miles!!

PostPosted: 19 Jul 2011, 23:01

HiAll, We have a balance left of 27,500 on VS miles after we take our M+M flight to MCO in Sept, the expiry date for our original 50,000 miles is April 2012. Question is, will we now loose the balance left? :?

Edit by mod to thread title from VA to VS to prevent confusion.... Nick

All you need to do is complete an earning activity and the expiry date is extended 3 years from the date of transaction.

For example, if you weren't planning to take a flight, you could purchase something online instead through the VS shopping link and the expiry date of your FC account will be extend to 3 years time.

I thought it was any activity? I seem to remember that when I spent miles last year my expiration date was the date of the last flight. lufcgirl, check your account on the VS website even before you take the flight as it indicated a future expiration date based on that flight. If it is not there then check after the flight and if it still says April 2012 then you still have time for some activity

One of the easiest ways of keeping miles is to purchase some

For as little as £30 you can purchase 1,000 miles. This gives you another 3 years from the purchase date for all of your miles to expire

It's more cost effective to purchase more miles, as there's a £15 overhead in any transaction

If you are taking a flight on an M+M ticket in Sept 2011 (=any activity), the remaining miles will be valid until Sept 2014. I have just booked some reward flights for March 2012 and my expiry date has now moved on to March 2015.

You should be able to check your account status online. There is a section at the top entitled "Your account summary"

Alternatively, as others say, you can spend on something - Virgin wines works well :)

If you're going on a virgin train you can now get miles for that too.

I'd advise against using that as a mechanism for extending your miles period if close to expiry, I've still yet to see any miles from my May bookings on virgin...

But fair enough if you do use them semi regularly, it will bump forward that expiry date I guess...

Booking hotels via hotels.com gives 4xpoints per pound at the moment (Not sure if permanent), and expedia 2xpoints but they don't claim to add on until you've used the hotel, and I can't confirm how close to the date that they'll appear and extend their statements...

Train miles are only posted on the date of booked travel and not the date of booking.

But unlike flights miles are credited even if you don't actually travel (though you do have to collect your tickets) so maybe buying a cheap fare and not travelling is an option ...

In theory. But I travelled in may and the points still haven't appeared for that and the other 8 return tickets of virgin trains I've travelled on since...

Strange but I'm sure that someone else reported something similar on here but it turned out that they had not entered their FC number into the Virgin Trains booking engine even though they used their VS Amex card - you have to do both.

If it helps I only travelled once with Vtrains and i supplied my FF number at the time of the booking form being completed and i never thought about it again assuming they were unlikely to turn up. Anyway when i went back over my activity history when logged into my FF account many months later there they were just quitly sitting there posted the date i travelled, The point for me was that i should have looked that far back.

cheers

In terms of how fast Virgin Trains miles post, all of mine have come through within a few days of travelling.

I think I read somewhere that if you have an open ticket they are posted on a date after the ticket theoretically expires, but if you have a ticket which is for a specific train on a specific date they post pretty quickly.

I suspect there are misleading items on the system.

I can look back and see the first class tickets I booked in April listed as being in April. But whether these were posted in April, or listed against travel in April, I'd expect the former, but I wasn't looking for them.

Also, a few recent bookings have been around 20 pounds, via virgin website, but on non virgin services (and also a 55 quid economy file). I'm wondering whether theres a price limit, and whether it has to be on a virgin route in itself.

But I expect them to kind of silently appear in my total sometime soon.

It could be that there are, yes, two mechanisms for earning miles off that, one using the amex card, and also listing your FF number at the bottom of the booking form. I do the latter, and that might be very delayed on getting filled out...

As I say my VS Trains miles posted with the date of my trip (booked a month before). It was a seperate entry on my FC account. I also got via the usual AMEX route the normal spend miles.

And yes only travel on a Virgin Train service qualifies even though you can book tickets for other operators on the V Trains site. It has to be booked via the V Trains website too.

Here is the link to the page on the VS website for Virgin Trains
