Flying London to San Francisco and returning back for Los Angeles.
Question is,what side of the aircraft do I pick seats for to get the best view out of London and into San Fran and also on return from L.A ?

It depends on the routing, but flying into London seating on the right hand side is possibly the best bet. If the routing takes you over the city itself then I think (though ISTBC) is eastwards the north side of Thames, a turn over Canary Wharf and then back westwards along the south side of the river.

For views of San Francisco, sit on the left hand side of the aircraft as you generally fly past the city before landing.

Agree! I was on the right hand side earlier this year and really missed the landing views
