Hello there folks - hubby and I always book exit seats and pay £50 for the middle seat and the seat by the window and the emergency shute "bump" is always free. We also like the exit seats by the galley and not the WCs. However, I have just phoned up Customer Services to order our seats for our flight to MCO on Wednesday and the customer service agent in Swansea knew nothing of this policy and charged us for the 2 seats, ie £100. Also, he could not tell us which seats we would be getting until checkin. Had Virgin's policy changed about charging for the window exit seat?

Which a/c are you flying on? I thought that policy was only on the 747's, so if you are on one of the new A330's then that might explain it.

The Exit Seat window is free on all aircraft except for Row 31 on the A340-600 and Row 75 on the LHR 747s. So it should be free, the problem is, as the seats are assigned at the airport of departure not in crawley or in some central office, It would only show in the system as you or your husband as buying the exit seat so you would be split up. By ringing up the agent, they would of charged you £100 for 2 exit seats so you both show up as purchasing the exit seat on the system so will get a aisle and centre seat.
As far as I know it is only possible to get the offer on buying the centre seat and getting the window free at the airport on day of departure.

IIRC there is a requirement of CAA that anyone occupying an emergency exit row seat has to be able bodied and therefore the check in staff have to "see you" before allocating the seats.
CC will always ensure the seats are occupied on take off and landing for safety reasons if not allocated in advance.

Thats correct. Staff have to verify that anyone sitting in an exit row is not only physically able to open the door but also to understand what is required of them.

And yes, if the seats are not already filled CC will ask other willing pax to sit in them during take-off and landing - pax can then move back to their seat. I recall this happened to Sealink when he flew to South Africa.

Happens to me all the time, I always go back to my original seat. I must be one of the few that does not like exit row seats.

You also has to be over the age of 16 to sit in an exit row seat on VS.
