V-Flyer

Having flown on New Years day (with lots of bleary eyed passengers LOL) I've never travelled on the eve itself. I'm now looking forward to the prospect of travelling on New Years Eve with DL the Elder and Nessy but what can I (we) expect? Given that we will leave LHR for NRT at circa 13.00hrs when will we be celebrating the New Year, and will there be any festivities onboard?

Possibly an announcement but nothing else.

Japan is 9 hours ahead of GMT so two hours into your flight it will be midnight in Japan so maybe a toast during lunch??

Having been on many aircraft for new year, you will find that most people are not really that fussed about it being new year. Some people might have a drink, some will not bat an eyelid from the movie they are watching, others will sleep right through it.

Have to agree with previous posts, we flew VS to MCO on New Years Eve one year and it was just a normal flight.
Suppose the time difference has some bearing!

Some people hate New Year either because of the year they've had or the one that is in front of them and to be somewhere where it isn't celebrated can be a relief

I operated a flight from Hong Kong to Sydney on NYE a few yrs back, being a Scotsman NY is a massive thing. About 20mins before midnight in SYD the crew and I handed out whisky to all the passengers and at midnight we toasted (with OJ of course) the bells and the New Year. The passengers absolutely loved it! So the moral to the story is get on one of my flights at NY. Alas, sadly I'm on days off this year Have fun wherever you are!!

Depends on which NY you are celebrating. We are in Vegas for NY, but will we be raising a glass at 4pm, when its uk New Year?? Where will the plane be timezone wise?

You might be missing an opportunity there, Tokyo being 9 hours ahead, you leave at 13:00, its 22:00 in tokyo at that time. You can celebrate the NY 2 hours in and then 55 minutes before you land (which is a bit of a rush).

Could celebrate each timezone on the way... Celebrating the timezone you are in having new year might be (according to my probably wrong calculations) about 4 hours into the flight.

I've been on board for NYE and nothing happened. I never expected anything to happen anyway as you have passengers who will want to be sleeping/left alone etc.
If I was really that bothered about NYE and all the celebrations that go with it then to be honest the last place I would plan to be would be on board a plane.

I was once on a VS flight from NY on NYE and it was very festive. The crew were all wearing various New Year hats etc and we had a quiz and everyone toasted in the New Year. Great fun ^)

So I suppose it depends on the crew |:)
