V-Flyer

Hello folks,

Im travelling with Virgin to Orlando soon, and are really looking forward to my trip. I've never travelled with Virgin Atlantic before so had one simple question.

Im planning on taking this HH duffelbag: http://shop.hellyhansen.com/item?lang=en&sku=67002 as my hand luggage. Is should be alrite, right? Size of this bag is: Size: 59 x 30 x 30 which is almost like a normal cabin case.

This is a very thorny issue. The VS regs say maximum hand baggage sizes are 23 x 36 x 56 cm (that’s approx. 9 x 14 x 22 inches), but it is clear to anyone who has ever flown, that these dimensions are exceeded time after time, by a huge number of passengers. Therefore, 99 times out of a hundred you won't have a problem.

Every now and again though, they seem to have a crack down - the problem then comes - what happens if they do it on the day you fly? You are only slightly over on one of the three dimensions, and under on the other two. I would be very surprised if you have problems, but no guarantees.

I am afraid it is your call - I hope you are okay with it.

Another consideration is the weight issue - if you're taking one back I'll bet you're over 6kg (VS's stingy and completely needless cabin baggage limit). Again, as Nick says, 99% of the time you'll get away with it, but then there's the 1% ...

True. But bag only weighs less than 1 kg, so its good enough for me to use as hand luggage. Only airline I've witnessed who are very strict with hand luggage is Ryanair. 6 kg limit is bit stupid tbh, normal cabin case weighs around 2-3 kg itself..

They were well hot on size and weight (luggage wise) when we came back from MCO in November !

I was pulled up on my last flight in November, the bag was just over 6kg but they did let it through

From the weight perspective, the trick here is to take out everything else that you can take on extra...

Hats, Coats, Cameras, Laptops etc.

You can soon get a 10kg bag down to 6kg! On my last flight back from MCO, I actually convinced the check-in agent that it wasn't worth her time waiting for me to unpack all these items only for them to be put back in once the bag was weighed again - all because it still had the outbound "this bag has been approved for cabin baggage" tag.

When checking in for a flight last year with VS, they made me transfer items from my overweight hand luggage over to my daughters underweight hand luggage

I said to them I didnt understand what the benefit was as the same weight was still going to be on the plane.

The only thing this process achieved was to make the check in queue longer!

watch an American internal flight...the definition of 'hand' luggage stops just before the kitchen sink !!!

i usually travel with hand luggage only so avoid check in and have never had an issue even with 10kg+ but still in a sports holdall.mostly its papers and a laptop
