Trying to understand fare pricing of upgraded flight

I wonder if anyone could help me understand this...

I recently bought an economy ticket upgraded to UC with miles both ways. (All done in one transaction over the phone.) I was charged an amount that was rather less than I expected. When I look at the breakdown of what I have been charged, the fare component (not the taxes and surcharges) is exactly £100 less than I had anticipated. I double-checked and, yes, for the fare itself I was charged exactly £100 less than the available L-class fare for my dates and flights.

Could anyone explain to me why this might be? I assumed that one would pay the L fare and then various extra taxes and surcharges etc (which I had calculated more or less correctly). Is there a special basis for upgradeable fares or something?

I'm certainly not complaining :) but I would like to understand the arithmetic behind it all if possible.

All help greatly appreciated!

Either you've been fortunate and the price has dropped since you checked or the lovely agent who helped you put in the wrong fare basis..Though as you say one shall not complain :-). Back to your original question from my past conversations on the Upgrades as you say you do yes pay the Y,B,R,L fare plus the charges between the Economy and Premium or Upper. Your accountant will be pleased. Haha.

Regards.

Don't try and understand the airlines pricing structure - it will damage your brain.
