What's VA's policy if flights are full in economy and you are bumped off? Do they pay compensation and upgrade you the next day?
Some years ago it happened to my family flying LGW to MCO with BA. We all got £250 and upgraded to business if we flew to Tampa instead.

They usually offer willing pax a red select voucher (free flight on the VS network) if they move to a later/next day flight. They do not offer an upgrade as part of the offer.

Yes, the select voucher covers all costs, but books in to the O fare code class, so there needs to be availability in that to be able to book, which can be a little tricky on flights are peak periods (MCO at Easter, NYC at Xmas/New Year etc)

They have a set 'offer' set by HQ and listed in the T&Cs but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to ask about an upgrade to PE (forget UC!) instead of taking the voucher (though they will convert this to 40k mile as some people have found it hard to redeem the voucher). It would depend on how desperate they are for seats and the numbers of people involved.

The rules for you volunteering not to fly are different to those that VS choose to deny boarding to.

My parents volunteered to be offloaded on a HKG-LHR flight. But the ground staff left it until the very last minute to tell them whether they are flying or not.

In the end VS gave them a select voucher each (of course you can either have a free flight or accept 50k (iirc) miles). They then put them both in an airport hotel for the night and flew them out with QF the next morning.

Since they were put on a QF flight by VS, they didn't get their VS miles or TP for the journey which is something I don't really agree with.

If your booked carrier re-books you on a different carrier then they will usually honour the miles you would have accrued with them.
I have experienced this a few times with UA when they had mechanicals.
