Transfer in MCO

I wonder if someone could help with this please. I did post on another site, but received several quite conflicting answers.
I am likely to be flying MAN-MCO shortly in PE. I will then be connecting to domestic flights on Delta.
This is a route I have done quite a few times, but not for about 18 months.
I know that normally, upon going through immigration and customs you have to hop on the train, go landside, then come back airside through the TSA check point. That takes a while.
However, my experience previously where connecting on Delta with hand luggage only is this - When coming out of customs, the airport staff try to funnel you to the right towards the train.
However, if you had a boarding pass and no bags, you could head left. This brought you round to a single X-ray manned by TSA, which is always really quiet.
Going through that takes you back into the airside part, near where the Outback Steakhouse is. It massively cuts down on connection times.
My connection is tight, so I posted elsewhere to ask if the "short-cut" so to speak still exists. Without for a moment knocking the knidness of those who responded, the replies I got were :
- you have never been able to take that short-cut.
- the short-cut was phased out 5 years ago,
- the short-cut was phased out a few months ago.
I must admit I only stumbled on it by chance, and a lot of airport employees don't seem to know it exists.
So, can anyone who has recently gone through Orlando shed some light please?
Thanks in advance.
