Good things do happen......with Virgin

A bit delayed in posting, but thought it might be relevant to all the disgruntled v-flyers out there.
Flew LHR-DEL-LHR over Christmas/New Year a few months back. Booked myself and the missus into PE @ £675 a pop via a Virgin summer sale.
A few days prior to departure I had a Virgin flight management (??) person call to say that she was looking at our flight and as it was quite full was wondering if she could 'entice' us to upgrade to Upper @ about £1000 a pop. Thanks but no-thanks was my response.....hoping that all those UC flights and the AU status would help on Christmas day.
Arrived @ LHR quite early for a 10pm departure as wanted to show the missus the Clubhouse (she had never been) - strolled up to Upper Class check-in and introduced ourselves. The lady at check-in gave us a complete stare down after looking for ages @ my AU card and then finally broke into a (slight) smile and said that we had been upgraded to UC. (Note to reader - I had known about this the night before when I tried OLCI but I acted surprised for the sake of the lady and my missus who I had not informed of our good fortune)
The Clubhouse was a treat - plenty of champagne, a light bite and then treatments for both of us (one of the few times that I actually managed to get one!) Boarding was swift and efficient and we had seats together towards the back of the UC cabin on a 340-600. Flight was very full but the crew did a fantastic job of ensuring we had a great trip (it probably helped that the missus explained to the cheerful CSD that we had just got engaged). Food was ok - I generally tend to find the Indian options in UC quite good. Wines ok too, with a reasonable number of choices.
My biggest gripe is with the Whisky - Aberfaldy or whatever it is just doesn't cut it with me.....they need to step it up a notch. Equally with the gin - would much prefer Hendricks (ok.....this may be more of a selfish preference!)
Overall a great flight, a very happy missus and into Delhi on time with a slight hangover but great memories.
