Upgrading flights when booked through VH

Ok so I've booked our family holiday to Orlando later this year. It's the first time we're going there :-).

Anyway, that aside currently all flights are booked as Economy. I don't usually fly economy, but as there's a few of us and at the time of booking upgrading seemed expensive for everyone.

What's economy like of VS, having never flown with them before? Also, as we booked through Virgin Holidays, all the upgrades have to be done through them. I called earlier to get an idea of price - they quoted £450+ pp to upgrade to PE outbound and a further £308pp inbound. Does that seem steep or reasonable?

Also, when checking in would there be the option to upgrade there (pending availability of course)? Or would this be pricey.

Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks,
Sean.

If you're used to Easyjet, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

If you're used to Singapore Airlines/Emirates/Air Canada/many others, well - honestly, I think you'll find it either on a par or (more likely) slightly below...

PE is probably worth it on a longer flight than Orlando. For there, though, I'd be tempted to spend my money when at my destination as the difference on a day flight won't be THAT material. On a night flight, even, I'm not convinced by PE. You're not in a bed - you're still sat bolt-upright trying to sleep, and that's a lot of money for a leather (assuming the upgrades to the aircraft are done in time) seat that can still have the person in front recline into you...

To me, £758pp to just upgrade to PE sounds an awful lot. Yes flying PE is more comfortable than flying in Y, I suppose you just have to weigh up whether it is another £758pp better than Y. If you offered each person in your party the choice of being upgraded to PE or you handing them £758 when they step off the plane to spend how they wish on their holiday, I can have a good guess at which would get the higher % take up.

I would heartily recommend spending an extra £20 each and getting extra legroom seats. It's not that long of a journey that economy is unpleasant.

The economy offering depends on which plane you are on also. If it's a 747 then it will be an older seat than on the A330. In terms of space, it IS economy so don't expect to have oodles of legroom (unless you get extra legroom). Plus, remember that at some times of year the planes aren't that full. It's not unknown for you to be able to have 4 or 3 seats to yourself in economy!

I have a recent trip report that I did in economy earlier this year if you are interested to find out my opinions.

I also agree that £758 each is a lot for an upgrade to PE for a return flight. VH flight upgrades do seem to have gone through the roof over the last few years.

My personal limit for a PE upgrade would be ~£300 each way.

You can upgrade VH booked flights at the airport directly with VS with cash but this is obviously dependant on there been availability on the day. It may well also be cheaper too.

I think mine would be a fair bit less than that, especially if I could bag extra leg room / exit rows for the return. 8D

Thanks everybody for your response. I guess you're right the extra money will be better for the holiday! :).

I've never flew in PE but I'd recommend spending on the extra legroom seats in economy, we did this for £30 pp going to SFO and I'd do it again.
