I've never understood these fare codes!

Hi all -

I am sure that this will be a really basic question for some of you, so forgive me! We have bought flights with miles - LR to JFK - out in P Premium, and back in G Upper. Is the P Premium ticket upgradeable, and if so how - miles or money?

Thanks in advance!

David

Yes it is upgradeable with miles. It used to be a U code but has changed to P. For a full explanation look at Fare Codes in The Toolbox tab on the menu bar

Hi
I have 2 P class tickets and I was lead to believe they are not upgradable using miles, reason being that initialy miles were used to purchase economy reward flights and then Virgin Amex Ugrade vouchers to premium. Is this correct or not?

Thx for help! :)

Nope, P is not upgradeable at all in fact - it is the upgraded fare code, i.e you used miles or amex voucher to get it....at least I think that's right.

EDIT: I could well be wrong about it not being upgradeable.

My understanding is that if you have used the Amex voucher to upgrade from Y to PE then no further upgrades using miles are allowed but a straight miles booking with no voucher is upgradable.

Are you sure honeylamb? I don't think P can be upgraded with miles, isn't P the fare code given to reward tix etc. W&S remain the only upgradeable PE fares right?

I have upgraded Amex PE vouchers at the airport. T&Cs say you can't but all bets are off at the airport.

P is the PE reward fare code. HL is correct that it can be upgraded.

If you have got a P by just using miles, or bought an upgradable economy fare and the upgraded using miles, you can upgrade to a G (UC reward seat) by using more miles, you cannot use cash.

If you have got a P by buying an economy reward fare and upgraded using the AmEx voucher, or your P is a companion fare, then you cannot upgrade it with either miles or money.

So it really does just depend on what type of P you have, as there are various restrictions depending on how you obtained it.

Hi all -

The tickets were booked in P with miles - not an Amex upgrade voucher. We are Premium out and Upper back as there was no miles space (when we booked) in Upper on the way out. We're a party of 2 adults and 3 children. We thought we might upgrade on the day to Upper on the way out if there is space, but unsure as to whether a P is upgrade able. Sounds like it might be, but only with miles though? (I am an Au, if that helps?). I think that's every little detail about the trip - hope that fills in any gaps?

Yes, your P is upgradable, but as I said above, only with more miles. You cannot upgrade a miles ticket with cash until you get to the airport, and even then it is only if they are offer the upgrade offers.

If you are considering doing it on the day with cash, then it would have to be one of the 'on the day' prices only, which would work out a very expensive way to do it (IIRC the W-J upgrades are about £600pp one way, so a lot for all 5 of you).

Of course, if there are plenty of seats available, then they might be willing to do some miles upgrades on the day also, but that is probably less likely, as they are more likely to release miles seats in the week prior to the flight (if the loads are low) and others will have probably snapped them up before the day.

Thanks chaps - sounds like that's settled then - I'll call up a week or so before and see if there's any space in Upper for us. If not, Premium will be just fine - JFK is only a short hop ;-)

Chaps? Moi? :o)

Do a couple of dummy bookings using the Spend Miles options and see if any seats have been released. Mind you I'd advise you to choose a single passenger option at first rather than for all 5 just to get an idea of the general availability
