Not sure if I have imagined this or not but is there a set of emergency exit seats in economy that cost less than the rest because it is obstructed by the door panel? I thought I had read this somewhere? I am looking at a cheaper option for extea legroom for my husband for a future trip. We would normally go PE. I don't really need the legroom as I am only 5ft 2 so I could use the seat with the obstructed space. I might have got this completely wrong and it might not exist?!?

do you mean the 'bulge' that contains the slide?

I don't think those seats cost any less than the other seats in an EE row.

There are extra leg room rows (not EE) that are cheaper that EE rows though.

Yes I thought I read somewhere that if you booked the window and aisle because of the bulge you got one half price?!? Must have dreamt it!!

I have a vague recollection that this is correct but others will be able to confirm it

I have just found where I read it, it was on another forum, the OP said they only got charged for one seat because the door restricted the other?!? I will PM them to get more info although after mulling this over I think I might just save harder and stick with PE!! :-0

used to be able to get the window seat free when paying for the middle exit row seat on 747, due to the bulge restricted leg room, not sure if this is still the case

Oh ok so it might be the case then, we would be doing LHR to DC so we could look at PE out and then exit rows on the way back as its a 747 from New York to LHR, think I need to look at prices and all options. It would be for flights in feb next year. Might see if they come up in a sale later in the year

I hate these decisions!!

also, exit row seats are slightly narrower as they have the trays housed in the armrests

The narrower seat doesn't worry us, we managed to get them one year as they needed someone to sit in them for take off and the width didn't worry us, but thanks as this could be a decider for some people

Just to confirm there are exit seats that do have the "bulge" that are not sold for the extra £50/$80 because the legroom is restricted, these seats are usually sold on a Buy one get one free basis with the centre seat next to them (So it would be £50/$80 for both instead of £100/$160). Exit seats are pre-bookable now through the call centre, however I'm not sure they offer this, as it could be an at the airport offer only. The seats that do have the bulge are:

747 (LHR)
Rows 39 and 49 (Seats A and K)

747 (LGW/MAN/GLA)(New and Old Configuration)
Rows 25, 38 and 49 (Seats A and K)

A340-300
Row 50 (Seats A and K)

A340-600
Row 51 (Seats A and K)

A330 (LGW/MAN/GLA and LHR)
Row 50 (Seats A and K)

I hope this helps, If you give the flight numbers, I could give the specific seats to ask after?

I have 2 question regarding legroom:
Where is it best to book extra legroom, at the airport or over the phone?
If it's done over the phone do you get to choose your seat when OLCI opens?

Best to do it over the phone and sooner rather than later. They may well all be gone by the time you get to the airport - remembeer there are not very many on each plane and lots of people want them.

And no I don't belive you get to choose which of the extra leg room seats you get.

Does 51A on the 346 really have the bulge? I checked this, or at least I thought I did, last week, and I thought that the door was quite a way forward of the seat.

Yes Row 51 is classed as having the bulge (while the other exit row, row 31 has a smaller exit only door so different slide configuration, so the window is charged for)

Just one other things to consider with the exit row seats, they do get very cold and if this is an over night flight you may find this a bit of a concern ?|

....and lets also not forget that if you are instructed to do so by the crew, it's down to you to get that door open in an emergency |:)

Many people do seem to forget about that little extra responsibility that comes with exit row seats.

However I rang Virgin last night and they denied that there are any exit seats on their aircraft that are sold on a 'buy one get one free basis' due to the restricted legroom from the bulge in the door casing.

Can anyone help with which is correct please as I would like to purchase exit seats or extra legroom seats on flights from LGW to LAS and back in August.

I used to work for virgin so this is correct, however it is not available over the phone, due to how the system is set up, when prebooked online or by phone, it simply doesn't class the window exit seats as an exit seat available to purchase, so the BOGOF offer doesn't exist. It is available however at the airport when checking in. As the agent can then assign the seats together.

Thanks for your reply. Just to be sure I have this correct, this means I could not buy exit seats in advance as they would obviously charge for 2 seats. I would need to take my chances and turn up at the airport and if they have these exit seats left they could then sell them to me on the BOGOF basis?

We flew LGW-MCO on VS27 last November and managed to bag the exit row at twilight check-in. The very helpful lady on the desk booked us in to the AC seats on the A330 - we were charged only for the C seat due to the door obstruction of the A seat but actually found it wasn't an issue at all. Certainly worth the £50 much more than the 34" seats further back at £30 each!

If the extra legroom exit row is important to you, paying the other £50 so you can buy the two in advance makes sense to me.

In the past I have tried to book a single exit row close to the date of travel and found they had all gone. I went for extra legroom instead which was fine.
