Hi

We are travelling to Las Vegas on 19th July on a 747-400 and when I log in to manage booking it looks like we have been allocated row 45 seats J and K. Are these good seats? I have heard Virgin are refurbishing the planes and i'm hoping this is one of the planes?
I have never flown with Virgin before always with Thomas Cook to Florida and i'm worried that the seat pitch isn't as good with Virgin.

Maybe i'm wrong but I would love peoples opinions please

Hi - those are bog-standard economy seats with a pitch of 31 inches. That's 2 less than Thomas Cook but at least your meals and luggage are free and you don't have to pay to select your seats or sit together. They're on the right hand side about half way back - one next to the window, the other in the middle of a set of 3. Nothing wrong with them but many frequent flyers like to be as near the front as possible so they can get off faster and reduce queueing time at immigration. If it lets you online, you might want to see if there's anything in the 20s. If not, it's worth asking when you check in as lots of seats are held back until check-in opens. In the Toolbox section of this site you'll find seat maps and ratings which may be of help.

So far only one of Virgin's Gatwick-based 747s has been refurbished. By the time you fly that may have gone up to 2 or 3 so potentially you'll have a 1 in 3 chance of being on one. Unfortunately there's no way of knowing until the day.

If you want more space, Virgin do sell "extra legroom" seats with 34" pitch or exit row seats with virtually unlimited legroom (not for kids though). If you booked direct with Virgin online or by phone you can call them and book these in advance. Otherwise you'll have to wait until you check in at the airport and hope they still have some.

Thank you for your reply. If the people infront put their seat back will we still have enough room to move around? When i've had a look at the pics it looks like if they put their seat back that you can't really move around as it comes so far back.
Also do Virgin do free drinks throughout the flight or is that only for Premium Economy and up?

All drinks are free on all Virgin flights in all cabins

I guess that depends how big or small you are but no, there's not a lot of room particularly on the unrefurbished planes where some of the seats probably recline more than they should because of their age.

If you're really worried about it, extra legroom seats to LAS cost 35 pounds per person per leg, and exit row seats are 80.

And as James says, your drinks are all free

i think if the system lets you pic seats they must know what plane and configuration is to be used that day
if you look at the seat plans you can work out if its an old style or new (ie economy on upper deck is the dead give away)

Economy seat maps are up anyway, they are just allowing pre-allocation of the downstairs section, so you still won't be able to tell as the config will always show as the old one and they will just change it a couple of days beforehand knowing it won't affect the economy reservations.

Thank you for all for your replies. Im only 5ft1 so maybe I should try the seats and see what I think for next time plus that way I will have a little extra for Vegas.

Lol oh I see. What will I need for the online check in? Its my little girls birthday the day before and we are taking her out so I will have to take the laptop and try and sit somewhere quiet for 5mins : )

If you have filled in your API all you will need is the booking ref and the passenger names to complete OLCI.
