What's a '744'?

Hi all,

We're due to fly out to Antigua on the 11th July. I phoned VA to make a change to our return flight & asked the advisor about the plane. She said we were due to travel on a 744 whereas they usually say a 747. I've never heard of a 744, can anyone shed any light on this? Would it be a refurbed plane?

Hi and welcome to V-Flyer.

It's a 747-400 aircraft. It gets abbreviated to 744 just as the A340-600 becomes an A346 and an A340-300 becomes an A343

Many thanks. I almost got my hopes up thinking we were on a refurbed plane!

It is a member of the 747 'family' of planes that are based on the same basic design but with updates.

This wiki article gives more info on the 747 family.
