Warning: Do not order the beef short rib

I am generally a fan of sous vide cooking and believe it works great with short ribs. However the brown spongy blob served in upper class and termed "beef short rib" on VS 40 the other evening was horrible. A frozen salisbury steak is a gourmet meal compared to the tasteless and awkwardly textured meal I was served. :$

The meat, which looked more like a parboiled bovine placenta, is probably the worst thing I have eaten anyplace ever. Calling it "airplane food" is too great a compliment.

Someone reader will surely order it simply to see if it as as awful as I claim, but I suggest packing a meal if you are so foolish as to try it. You will be hungry.

The wife's chicken was excellent as was the lemon cheesecake.

I had the the braised ribs on the VS 19 and they were excellent. Was this on an ex-USA flight?

Maybe it is just an ex-USA problem? The [alleged] beef I was served ex-MCO back in February was cremated and like shoe-leather. In fact, shoe-leather would probably have been preferable...

I have always found the UC meals to be better when flying from the UK. (I have only done UK-USA routes though).

I had it last night UC on the VS12 from BOS to LHR and I can honestly say it was one of the BEST pieces of meat I have had on an aircraft ever. The veg was cooked well and the little pot of gravy, sauce etc, was good.
I wonder if it is down to the staff leaving them in the ovens for too long while distracted with other jobs??

Perhaps in light of the recent numerous posts on the in flight catering VS should remove the meals from being included within the ticket price. Fares Could then be reduced by £200 ( haha) and we could all take our butties on board

Have to say - I had this last night and it was very nice. Big chunk of beef, well cooked and nicely flavoured...

I concur, had the braised short rib on the VS20 end May and it was one of the best VS meal offerings I've had to date.

I think it just goes to show the lack of consistency where many of us have had the same meals and come away with conflicting views.

I would normally chalk it up to differences of opinion, but I had the short rib on the VS8 in May and it was an overcooked blackened lump of meat. It wasn't inedible, it just wasn't great and it didnt affect the overall meal experience.

I was on the same flight and ordered the same braised short rib. I concur that the meal was great as well. y)

If it's beef, then it's usually better ex-USA than ex-UK in my experience.

My daughter ordered the short rib ex MCO last night on the 74 and it was terrible. Tough as an old boot.

Had the beef ex IAD on Thursday and I have to say that whilst nothing to overly write home about it wasn't bad at all. Ahh VS inconsistency at its best.. ^)

Ah c'mon lads! I can order the same cut of beef each week (well whenever Aer John is home these days). I cook it in exactly the same way but some weeks it is better than others - some weeks it is melt in the mouth and others......well!

It all depends on the cow!! Years ago at a niece's wedding we were served beef which was as tough as old boots. I always remember my nephew's comment - "That cow had many calves!" :o)
