The phone is plugged into the JAM IFE. Unfortunately you can't sue Louis, on some of the fleet you can use a service called Aeromobile: ( http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/gb/en/th ... obile.html ) that allows you to text and call people whilst you are up in the air - just not during take off and landing |:)

I am on some of the last Hong Kong Airlines flights between London and Hong Kong in the next couple of weeks and am looking forward to a final play with the Wi-Fi on board for a while!

I agree with Wi-Fi but I think calls and texts are stupid as you disturb other pax, and they are also a bit of a rip off!

Erm, I don't think you will be able to do so. As far as I am aware Aeromobile is only on the new A330 planes and only in UC

I think the poster was referring to using WiFi on their Hong Kong Airlines flight :)

Yep, thanks Neil.

I don't know if you know but when they fly over China the Wi-Fi slows down as it all goes through mainland Chinese servers which copy all the transmissions. Sounds like that was one of the rules of allowing it to operate.

They turn off the GSM coverage over China as the Chinese can't intercept that.

The current record height for communication with V-Flyer is 39,969 feet, held by my goodself.

Aeromobile is available throughout the aircraft and I believe it's also on the refitted LGW 744s. The system shuts down over US airspace though.

And to prove it works: :D

However it seems phones MUSt be turned off (as addressed by crew)
I CAN SUE FOR THIS!!

:P

If everyone sued VS for misleading advertising, SRB would be broke. The stuff they put out can be a stretch at the best of times.

Has anyone actually seen AeroMobile being used?

Not on VS but I have used it on Hong Kong Airlines, a "test" call using the work phone. Huge delay as goes via satellite and cost an absolute fortune.

I called Orange to ask them what the price per minute and text price was and they told me that I couldn't use it.
I then said I already had and have been charged for "in flight" use and so they must have a roaming agreement with Aeromobile. They then said that if we were flying low then I might have picked up the signal from the ground we were flying over.
