Thanks Penny. Friends trying to go at weekend and was wondering. They have done their ESTA already. (Posting this on a blackberry and its not easy. Lol. )

State dept prefer the ESTA to be done 72 hrs before travel, but the border guards have told me in the past they get last minute requests through all the time.

And yeh APIS can be done at check-in. Just the gov't being nosey into our travel plans upon reaching the US.
