What is your source for and definition of a 'near miss'?

Nothing in Aviation Herald but go arounds are pretty common place and normally not worth reporting.

My source was being sat on the left hand side and seeing an aircraft very close just below us ! we then pulled up and went around for five mins. Just wandering if something like that has to be reported ?

All near misses are investigated in the UK by the AAIB and CAA but a near miss can be not so near, infact I think a near miss can be up to 2 miles apart (this is at high altitude and high speed) It's probably not a near miss, parallel approaches are common e.g. SFO
There are lots of reasons for a go-around. Sometimes the pilots say over the PA.

What the OP described was not a near miss in the way you're describing it, more likely a runway incursion and a simple go around. Lots of v-flyers have experienced at least one go around, they're pretty common.

I have had a couple of these incidents going in to Boston.
Mine have not been near misses, as the pilot described them "ATC asked us to do something impossible"!!
This was normally proceeded by a very sharp right hand turn and descent followed by a tight left hand bank while still descending.
My assumption was that they were trying to sneak the VS11 in between other and the pilots were not happy with the configuration / speed / approach of the aircraft and, thankfully so, decided to abort the landing.
Does beg the question why they don't just say no??? LOL
