My DD is flying out to SFO on monday. I called VA on Monday just to enquire how much an upgrade from ECO to PE was. £210 on the way home and over £1k on the way out !!!! Ummm no thanks.

Today she gets home and casually says someone from Virgin called today and offered me an upgrade to PE for £70. I said no because its all the same basically isnt it ?? :0 :0 :0

She did have the sense to ask if they had anything in FC :D

Will be calling back first thing in the morning.

Haha. Fingers crossed!

Any maybe make a flowchart with upgrade prices and when it is appropriate to say yes ;-)

Interesting that the upgrade price has changed so dramatically too!

An upgrade to PE for £70 and a west coast flight! I would have snapped that.

was it an upgrade to PE, or for an exit row seat? Flightstats showing PE is full

I hate to say it but I suspect penny is right (although exit row to SFO is £75). For an upgrade to plummet in price like that on a busy flight so close to departure just seems very very unlikely to me - sadly. But let's hope I'm wrong!

Having thought about it also and knowing how much DD pays attention to whats being said I think you may be right.

Do VS try and proactively upsell exit row seats though? I was always under the impression they were something you had to specifically ask for given that a significant percentage of passengers aren't allowed to occupy them.

And if they don't sell them they make passengers from other rows sit in them during take off and landing!

so does that mean that passengers are forced to sit there for takeoff and landing (or else the plane could not take off) but then moved back to their own seat because they havnt paid for the extra legroom ?

there has to be someone in the exit seats for take off and landing, as those people are expected to operate the doors and assist in the eventuality of an emergency evacuation. After take off, and when seatbelt signs are off, you are free to sit there, or move back to your original seat.

Just a funny interlude here regarding VS's BA cousins, was on a BA flight a year or so back on a lads holiday and seated very smugly in the exit row seats were a family including two young kids... Needless to say they were unable to remain there and we were asked to take their place. Of course we agreed and the CC then approached the family to ask them to move.... Here's the funny part, the parents accepted their kids had to move but themselves refused ?| ?|

Well the cabin crew did not handle it in the best of fashions at first accepting this compromise!!!!!! :0 the CSS wandered along and instructed the parents to go with their offspring.... They did eventually comply although asked to move back to the exit rows post takeoff ii) the answer was unsurprisingly no.

Hats off to VS for at least double checking eligibility at checkin, even if at times they appear to flog them to the highest bidder 8D
