What happens if I cancel?

Hi - Having posted about upgrading my flights to MIA in April, it now looks increasingly likely that we will have to cancel for family reasons (nothing terrible, but annoying nonetheless!).

We booked the flights to MIA when the half-price miles sale was on, and then upgraded to PE with AMEX vouchers. If we do cancel, what will we get refunded in terms of miles, upgrade voucher and mostly importantly the £850ish I paid in 'taxes'?

I can't find anything about this on the VS website (probably not looking in the right place!).

Thank you
Sally

You can claim back your taxes, although be careful as VS are clever at not trying to pay back the fuel surcharges, but there are people who have received it back.

You will receive 75% of the miles back.

I'm honestly not sure about the voucher though, they do have a 1 year expiry (you have to book a flight within one year of the voucher hitting your account), so it could have expired even if they did give it back.

if your figure of 850ish in taxes includes the fuel surcharge amount, which is normally the biggest chunk, you dont usually get that part back

http://virginatlantic.custhelp.com/app/ ... 0surcharge

it depends on the fare type booked, fully refundable tickets would get it back

Hi there

A few years ago I was unable to travel on a PE reward flight (LHR-EWR-LHR in July 2004) so I contacted the FFC to advise them and I was told that I could take the flight at any other time over the next twelve months from the scheduled departure date. When the time came to try and book another flight I called the FFC quoting the original booking ref I managed to secure a PE seat (LHR-SFO-LHR in Feb 2005) and was only charged the £25 admin fee.

As I said this was a long time ago and I wasn't using an Amex upgrade voucher.

There are example cases of them refunding the fuel surcharge on reward bookings - you need to push them :)

So the fuel surcharge is an 'extra' until it comes to refunds when it's an intergral part of the non-refundable fare!! Nice try VS!

I know, sounds like a court case to me.

The argument I used when I had to cancel two G's was "so you refunded part of miles correct?, in that case, this is a refundable fare so I would like to have my fuel surcharge refunded"

They really didn't like that argument, but they still refunded the YQ charge.

An update - having cancelled my trip to MIA :( a couple of weeks ago, I have been waiting patiently for my refund from VS. As expected, I got 75% of the miles refunded and the AMEX vouchers, and was pleasantly surprised to find today that they had refunded me the whole amount of 'taxes' less £35 pp admin fee. I fully expected to lose a whole lot more so I am really pleased with the outcome!
