That's interesting, I'm not quite sure how they're ranked though. I would imagine the majority were on local routes, the GOL accident was, although the SAA loss was the Helderberg and that was quite a while ago now, 87 I think!

Statistics, don't you love 'em!

Air India - figures don't tell the story of the terrorist incident that accounted for 1 hull loss and 200(ish) fatalities
GOL - 1 hull loss with all on-board - not their fault
China airlines - safety record has improved steadily - figures would be entirely different if the timescale was last 5 years
Thai/Turkish - hmmm!

The "10 safest airlines" is an interesting read as well...

BA 10th and VS 15th
Emirates and Etihad right near the top - new airlines operating more moder airliners

Luck - if the QF incidents with the A380 engine and A330 uncommanded pitch up/down had been different outocome (and the A380 one was closer youanyou might think), QF may have appeared near the top.

Interesting head - but the figures alone really don't tell the full story.

I remember an old teacher of mine once saying " there are lies, damned lies and statistics"...... :D
Having once had the (mis)fortune of being on an Air India 747 from JFK to LHR though all I can say is I'll never get on one of their aircraft again, dirty and broken equipment abounded. :(! .

Not sure these ratings are worth a jot. A lot of things have changed since then. For instance in 1983 Notts County and Luton Town were in Div 1 ( Premiership now) Emirate were only formed in 1983 and Etihad in 2003. It would be more realistic if it covered the last ten years.

My experience of Air India, in India, was that smoking appeared to be acceptable, even during re-fuelling; never again.

I saw them play that season at both Meadow lane and Kenilworth road.
