Would you upgrade? Am I crazy?

Am currently on a P-class PE reward fare for a flight in April (upgraded from Y). There are Gs available, which would cost £53 extra in surcharge + 10k miles. Would you upgrade? Of course you would.

But I am not so sure. This is a trip on a new A333, so PE is lovely and the IFE will be good. I will get the AU perks anyway, which help a lot, so we are just talking about 7 hours in the sky. I am travelling with a colleague so PE actually helps conversation.

So I am just not convinced I should upgrade. I am clearly in need of help. Am I going crazy? Does anyone understand me? :D

if you have thousands of miles and the 10k wont make a dent then its all down to £53...........

i am guessing it may be a NY flight so what 3500 miles or 1.5p per mile

1 and a half useless pennys

imagine if you save 20p a day in a jar between now and April 1st even thats already a quarter of the way....

1.5 pennies................

enjoy UC :-)

Difficult question and usually yes anyone who turns down an UC seat for £53 + 10K miles is crazy.... however in my view it isn't worth it this far out. As you say you get the AU perks which covers all the UC benefits on the ground..... PE is good enough for a couple of hours.

What I usually do is to see how I'm feeling on the day :P If I could use a slap up meal not served from a cart, a bar and a nap.. I try for UC, if not you will see me madly working away in PE - now that sometimes looks crazy ):

flabound makes some good points, however I stick by the needs must argument.. besides all those thousands of miles may one day come in handy ;)

Decisions, decisions 8D

I'm sensing some deja vu here albeit at a lot lower cost!
It's being with your colleague that I guess is what is leaving you in two minds.
If you like him/her and want to have a few drinks with them I would stick with him/her or if you fancy ignoring them then go for UC.
Was going to say if you fancy some privacy go UC but we all know you won't get much of that on an a330!
I think that the recent debate about the 330 is about to resurface

Lol, all in due time blacky... soon you will have the mileage levels to pull this kind of scenario off.

You make a fair point about the travelling colleague.... hmmm a tricky situation, although I have once been op-uped and left a friend in PE before. Spoke to the FSM and he was able to join me at the bar for the whole flight.. was really good fun and we were def a bit worse for wear coming off that flight ii)

For me the suite onboard (even on a short flight and an A333) and being able to use DTCI and have slightly quicker disembarkation would make it worthwhile

Working on the mileage joey ,the wife will shortly be donating although she doesn't know it yet!
Changing the subject slightly do you get miles when you sign up for a credit card in the CH ,sure I've seen it somewhere

There are incentive offers from time to time. The person you are looking for is the charming woman whose name begins with A (have not sought permission to name). She tends to float around the CH like a spectre approaching random people asking them about Flying Club, how it can be improved, likes, dislikes and then you get the Credit Card pitch :P

Always worth a chat and a chuckle. Bonuses tend to range from 20-30K miles with 2K spend in first 90days. 8D

Joey ,met that lady and lovely she was too,I signed up for a CC and am waiting for it to arrive any day now but I've mislaid the stuff she gave me hence the question.
10 k limit on it aswell which I thought was unusually high for a new CC
Trying to build the miles up for Boston in April.
At240 sorry for changing the original topic

Ahh ok. Have a nice chat?

If no bonus shows up, a quick call off to VS and let them know that you were promised X amount of miles in order to sign up. They will either contact MBNA to have them credited to your statement when the target balance is reached, or they might be able to do it themselves.. not sure.

I'm fairly certain at240 won't mind - all relevant to mileage earning (or spending) :P

Much as I disike UC on the 330, for that marginal cost, I would take it any day. Plus you can then complain about what a poor experience it was and hopefully they will give you 10k miles back in recompense :-)

Thanks for the replies :D

flabound -- I hadn't thought of it like that! £1 per day in a jar and it is easy. :)

Trevski220 -- good point, I had not thought of DTCI, thanks for that.

ratechaser -- what with the base miles I'll earn on the economy fare, I would be in the black after your scheme. ):

Blacky1 -- no worries :)

Ha ha, that is actually the response I expected and hoped for. Now you've told me that, I feel perfectly justified in booking the upgrade.

After all, if you're travelling with a colleague you'll be seeing a lot of him / her ... my policy is never to sit next to colleagues on a flight ): .

Well, just to update this, my madness continues...

Three times now Gs have appeared. And each time I haven't felt like upgrading.

I would happily fly PE if only I could have Clubhouse access before the flight.

I do love the bar too... so for £53 and 10k miles I'd jump at the chance.

I am convinced that some within VS have been trained by drug dealers ): They entice you into UC either by a free upgrade or next to nothing and the next thing you know you are selling your own grandmother to fly UC

that's what happened in the Buns Household :| :| :|

Ha ha ha ha ha, simple economics then, no? :o)

Just like buses in London then, when you want one there are none to be found.. when you don't three come along at once....

Lol, wasn't I the only one who said wait to see how you feel on the day, if you're not feeling it, PE is good enough with AU perks and save your miles? :P

I still stick by my former position, AU perks + PE seats are good enough for the day flights into NYC - I'm guessing ;) - as always though see how you feel on the day, you're not that crazy. 8D

I'm starting to think the same now - but doubtless when I check the seats will be gone!

I love an S (or above) class in PE.
for £53 or $82 on the way back it's a no brainier, no matter how long the flight IMHO.
The way I look at it is when you are sitting in PE, cursing the fact the armrests do not move and all that lovely space in the empty seat next to you is going to waste. Even worse if it's a full PE cabin. How much would you pay to have that armrest move so you can stretch out a bit?? £10?? £20?? At £20 you are almost half-way there, plus you would get a flat bed (UCDS or not) better food, get off the aircraft and thru customs before a lot of others.

Just wondering, if you are not Au, you take the upgrade are you entitled to use Revivals Lounge? If so that makes it even better value for money coming back in to LHR!!

Hi, im looking for some advice following on about upgrades to first class. I want to go to Los Angeles/Vegas, or would fly to San Francisco in August but it seems as though it is incredibly busy during that period and all sold out for 2 reward seats. I have enough miles for the ticket for the 2 of us, as have been saving for a while. Do you know if Virgin release any more reward seats closer to the date? or any other options? thanks in advance
