Hello One and All,

Firstly, many congratulations for your 10th birthday and may you long continue.

I have been trawling through various posts regarding air miles and upgrades and l do apologise if this has been answered before but l am a tad confused with these L M N O P fares..so to speak! I know l can call the FC but you guys here have so much experience.
I am hoping to fly to Boston in June, travelling solo for the first time. I have 75,000 air miles and am asking what would be the best way to book an UC flight.
I know l will have to pay something and that's fine. By using the miles does it ensure that l will travel in UC..or are there certain issues l need to be aware of.
I really would appreciate your advice here please.
Many Thanks

I suspect the cheapest way would be to buy 5000 miles and then book a reward UC return for 80k miles + taxes and surcharges (reckon on c. £500).

An alternative would be to book an upgradable economy fare (M or higher) and then use 40k miles to upgrade into UC plus extra taxes and surcharges. Will cost probably £800+ all in, but you earn miles on the economy fare and also TPs, if you are bothered about those.

Both options require reward availability. Once the ticket is booked then I think you are as secure as with any other booking.

Good luck :)

Hi there!

The best value from your miles is to upgrade from a cash fare. But Virgin have a limit on seats that can be purchased or upgraded using miles.

The best thing to do is to use the main Virgin website to search for "Upper Class" fares, and select 'Spend Miles'. This will let you see the dates that have Upper Class seats available that can be paid for by miles.

Then, use this bit of the website: Upgradeable fares to book an upgradeable ticket.

The only thing to remember is that Upper Class fares using miles don't qualify for chauffeur transportation to Heathrow. But you can use your miles to book one of those if you are so inclined.

All a bit of a faff which will probably require you to call them!

If you want to go the upgrade route, don't book the upgradeable fare on the website - the free (mileage) seat might have disappeared before you book it, leaving you with an expensive ticket you didn't want. Its best to ring Flying Club, explain what you want to do and get them to hold the upgrade seat whilst they sell you the upgradeable ticket - both need done at the same time. I hope this makes sense!
